The internet is full of all kinds of tips to save money. Here we give you 7 tips to reduce your energy consumption and therefore to save on your energy bill if you have a smart thermostat.

A smart thermostat is a handy device that you can operate remotely, among other things. In addition to a ‘normal’ smart thermostat, there are also smart modulating thermostats that support OpenTherm, such as the Netatmo Smart Modulating Thermostat. If you have a smart thermostat at home, we have a number of useful tips that can reduce your energy consumption, so that you save on your energy bill. Although the tips are written for the Netatmo thermostat, they are also (largely) applicable to other smart thermostats.

1. Analyze consumption habits
In order to save on your energy bill, it is important to analyze your consumption habits. Once you understand your habits, you can create effective schedules that help you conserve energy while maintaining a comfortable temperature when and where you want it.

2. Not every room is the same
When drawing up the schedule, it is better not to heat every room the same. To save energy, it is best to heat rooms based on how much and what you use them for.

3. Do not heat continuously.
With the Netatmo Smart Thermostat you can schedule when the thermostat is on based on your own schedule. If you leave the house for work every morning and come back in the afternoon, you can set the thermostat to turn off while you’re gone and turn back on just before you get back. This way you save energy when you’re away and you still come home to your desired temperature.

4. Not a smart radiator valve everywhere
You don’t have to spend a fortune to start saving with smart heating. With the Netatmo Smart Radiator Valve you can monitor and adjust the heating how you want it. However, it is not necessary to install a Smart Radiator Valve on every radiator in your home. You can already control the radiators and save on energy bills by installing them only on the main radiators. But the more Smart Radiator Valves you install, the more precisely you can control the heating.

5. Slow heating saves more
Instead of turning up the radiator all the way or cranking up the thermostat to heat up a cold room, you’ll save more energy by setting the thermostat to a moderate level and heating the room more slowly.

6. Consider the weather and outdoor conditions
By combining different Netatmo smart home products, you can save more energy. The Smart Thermostat can be linked to the Smart Weather Station. The thermostat can then take into account the outside conditions to adjust the temperatures inside.

7. Adjust schedule
Once you’ve set a schedule for the Smart Thermostat that works for you, make sure to check back in from time to time and adjust the schedule to suit the season or current weather conditions.
