Tree cover on the intended German Tesla site shut down

The tree felling on the site near Berlin where Tesla wants to build its first European factory must be discontinued immediately. A German court ruled that Sunday in a case brought by local environmentalists.

Tesla wants to build a factory in Grünheide for the production of electric cars and batteries, Elon Musk announced in November. It would be the first production facility in Europe where Teslas are made. There are now two factories in the United States and one in the Chinese Shanghai. There is a Tesla assembly hall in Tilburg.

Formally, Tesla has not received any permission at all to build the ‘gigafabriek’, all preparatory work is at Tesla’s own risk. However, permission had already been given for the felling of trees, a 92-hectare forest on the site. That tree cover has now been successfully challenged.

The court immediately stopped the roof, because otherwise the trees would have disappeared. This does not mean that they will not have to leave the field for the Tesla factory. Musk said earlier that it concerns trees intended for the production of paper.

Bombs from the Second World War were also found at the end of January on the piece of land in Grünheide. The government paid for the costs of cleaning it up. Earlier that month there were protests from local residents against the arrival of the factory.
