Twitter Topics: This is how you follow topics instead of accounts

Are you interested in everything around your favorite football club? Or do you want to stay informed about a TV series? From now on you can follow Topics on Twitter. This will keep you informed of everything related to a particular topic.

Twitter Topics: Follow topics instead of profiles

Twitter shows what is happening in the world, and that can be overwhelming. You will soon find yourself in a bubble and potentially interesting topics and events will pass you by. The social platform has now come up with a solution for this: Topics. That is how it works:

  1. Download the latest update for Twitter;
  2. Open the app and scroll through your timeline as usual;
  3. Press the ‘Follow’ button when you come across an interesting topic.

From now on, tweets, people, events and advertisements about this topic will appear on your timeline. Twitter occasionally proposes topics that you may find interesting, such as a sports club, social debate, TV series or political party, based on your profile. So you actually discover Topics in the same way that you currently bump into profiles.

This is how you recognize Topics

Have you followed one or more Topics? Then the topic will appear in your timeline, exactly in the same way as profiles. The icon at the top left of the message shows that this is a Topic that you are following, and not the contribution of a person. You can manage the number of Topics you follow in the settings menu.

Twitter Topics will be rolling out to all users in the coming months. The company hasn’t specified an exact release date, so it may take a while for you to see the feature appear. The topics proposed thus become more and more precise over time. Ironically, you may be strengthening the filter bubble with this.
