Use AirDrop safely on your Apple devices

If you have multiple Apple devices at home, you will undoubtedly know AirDrop. A technique with which you can transfer photos, videos and other files wirelessly at lightning speed. For example from your iPhone to your Mac or iPad. Don’t be surprised by an AirDrop bomb on the way!

AirDrop is – like so many wireless technologies – very useful. For example, if you want to quickly edit some photos taken with your iPhone on your Mac or iPad, you can transfer the case in no time. Wireless and all. It’s a matter of turning on bluetooth on both devices to be connected. And then on the receiving device AirDrop. And there you have to (a little bit) pay attention. To turn on AirDrop on the iPad, slide your finger down from the top right corner of your screen. You will find the AirDrop button in the Control Panel that you pull down with it.

Choose the option you really need

Tap the AirDrop button and you will see three options: Received from, Only contacts and Everybody. In principle, always choose Only contacts, then at least you know – hopefully – from whom you receive data. Do you choose Everybody, then everyone can ‘AirDrop’ your things. This is annoying, because before you know it you are suddenly in a packed train or in the middle of a presentation with a pontifical picture of something you would rather not have seen. Or at least not with a lot of others together. In short: never choose Everybody, or just use this option briefly if you want to receive something from someone you trust but is not in your contact list.

Choose from these options when it comes to AirDrop (and turn it off completely if you're not using it).

Off when you are done

And because one or more of your contacts may also like a chat, it is actually best to simply deactivate AirDrop when not using it. In other words, tap the AirDrop icon again after use, then choose the option Received from. It is also best to leave AirDrop off on your Mac. You can do this in Finder in the column on the left AirDrop to click. Then choose right via the selection menu I may be found by for the option Nobody. On the iPhone, you can find AirDrop in the Settings app. Tap on it General and then AirDrop, after which you will see the same options as in the iPad balloon. Precisely because AirDrop is a bit more hidden here, it is important to check every now and then whether this option is off or at least on Only contacts. Good for your privacy!
