Using Transparency Mode on AirPods Pro and AirPods Max

Those in possession of the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max can enjoy the music undisturbed thanks to active noise cancellation. Sounds from outside are automatically blocked and filtered. You can also use transparency mode.

Noise cancellation ensures that all ambient noise is blocked so that all you have to do is enjoy the music. Transparency mode works just the opposite, this option ensures that you can hear the surrounding sounds. Much safer when you are in traffic.

Explanation: Transparency mode

In the AirPods Pro/Max, Apple has incorporated several microphones, not only on the outside so that you can control Siri or make a phone call, but also on the inside. This allows the software in the Pods to enable Adaptive EQ and automatically tailors the music to the shape of your ears.

When you use the transparency mode, the microphones act on both the inside and the outside to counteract the noise-isolating effect of the silicone ear tips. The microphones on the outside pick up the ambient sound and send it to the speaker in a filtered manner, so that you hear the environment in addition to your music.

Apple indicates that the mode is mainly intended to have a natural conversation, but especially listening to music in traffic is much safer thanks to this mode. However, you do have to like the sound, especially if you start a conversation with someone. It’s more like a phone call you’re on, so removing the pods from your ears is a better solution in that case.

Switch between noise reduction and transparency mode

The AirPods Pro are equipped with a pressure sensor that is located at the bottom of the rod of the Pods. Press and hold to toggle between active noise cancellation and transparency mode. You will then hear a clicking sound to indicate that the mode is being switched.

The AirPods Max contains a push button, by pressing it you can switch between the different audio options.

If you’ve paired the Pods with an iPhone or iPad, you can also use the Control Center to switch modes or turn it off completely. To do this, open the control panel ▸ press and hold the volume switch ▸ Select a desired option.
