FIA ruling on budget ceiling
Wednesday will be an exciting day for Red Bull and Max Verstappen. At least, that’s what the competition seems to hope for. The FIA will then rule on the suspicion that Red Bull has exceeded the budget cap in 2021.
The Singapore race weekend was largely overshadowed by a riot between Red Bull and rivals Mercedes and Ferrari. The latter two accuse Red Bull of going well over the maximum budget last year. It is claimed that Red Bull would have spent about €10 million more than allowed. If Red Bull is actually wrong, a firm measure can be taken with retroactive effect and even Max Verstappen’s first world title (not for the first time) will be surrounded by question marks.
On Wednesday, the FIA will inform the teams that have remained under the budget cap. Then Red Bull will also hear whether it has adhered to the rules, or whether there is still a tail to the whole story. Team principal Christian Horner is confident: “We believe we are well below the ceiling. I have absolute confidence in our entry”, signs Motorsport on. The Briton did not mince words in his reactions to the Mercedes and Ferrari allegations last weekend and again does not: “Such baseless allegations are totally unacceptable. And on what basis? What is the source of that information?” Horner finds the allegations ‘defamatory’ and therefore legal action may also follow from Red Bull.
