The word “Vinyasa” means something like “in a certain way” (vi) “to lay, sit, put” (nyasa) and is Indian Hatha yoga attributable to.

Vinyasa yoga combines dynamic movement sequences (asanas) and controlled breathing (pranayama). This type of yoga is also called flow yoga and is one of the most famous in the western hemisphere.

Vinyasa yoga is primarily characterized by the combination of movement and breathing. The decisive factor here are flowing transitions between the individual yoga positions. The breath leads these transitions and you stay in the “flow”.

  • Move: One movement runs into the other. Which movements these are is determined in advance. On the one hand there are typical sequences, for example the Sun salutation or the Yoga dog. On the other hand, it may be that your: e yoga teacher: demonstrates their own vinyasa flows. Or you are a trained yogi and think up your own combinations. But this is only advisable if you have already mastered this type of yoga; because it is important to do the movements correctly.
  • Breathing: Try to focus on your breathing. Breathing should guide you through movements. That means, you move in sync with inhaling and exhaling. When to inhale or exhale can vary. Most of the time, breathing is conscious when taking and changing a pose.

Tip: When doing yoga, take time to relax before and after the actual exercises. This works, for example, if you close your eyes while sitting or lying down, try not to think about anything and consciously breathe in deeply through your nose and out through your mouth.

A combination of a continuous flow of movements and controlled breathing makes Vinyasa yoga something special.

The route is the goal: You don’t have to get from one position to the other as quickly as possible. Follow your breath. Take as much time as you feel good – because the transitions between movements are also important.

Good for the body and mind:

  • The muscles are strengthened, your body is more stable and you promote your balance. Many exercises work your abs, arms and legs.
  • You mobilize your back and joints.
  • You are stretching your muscles.
  • You strengthen your body awareness.
  • It is supposed to promote concentration and strengthen the mind.
  • As soon as you are “in the flow”, you can relax, you come to rest and your body and mind can become one.

Who is Vinyasa Yoga for?

Vinyasa yoga is suitable for everyone, including beginners. You can adapt the level of exertion or difficulty to your wishes and your ability, because: There are more or less strenuous flows. So if you are a beginner, we recommend that you integrate easier processes or attend a beginners course.
