A special moment for the Volkswagen Tiguan: Although the SUV from the compact mid-range has been with us for some time, it is only now making its first appearance in this section. The facelift version of the second generation Tiguan can start!

Volkswagen Tiguan 1.5 TSI 130 hp Life

€38,990

The Tiguan crawls just under 40 grand with the entry-level engine. As a Life Business, it costs €39,590, but above that the party only starts at €40,990 for the 150 hp 1.5 TSI. Only with that stronger power source is the seven-speed DSG automatic transmission available, the 1.5 TSI with 130 hp is always linked to a manual six-speed gearbox. In addition to the two variants of the 1.5 TSI, there is also a plug-in hybrid 1.4 TSI eHybrid with 245 hp available. However, it is only available as R-Line Business+ and therefore stands for a significantly higher price of €47,390 in the showroom. Diesels have less choice: their only option is the 2.0 TDI with 150 hp, which is always linked to the DSG.

In anonymity

From the outside, the Tiguan in its basic trim goes through life quite anonymously. ‘Urano Grey’ is the only paint color without surcharge, for the other eight available paint colors you have to put €220 to €1,210 on the table. The 17-inch ‘Montana’ alloy wheels are standard. While many manufacturers no longer offer a choice of wheel designs ex-factory, Volkswagen does. On the Life, in addition to the aforementioned wheels, you can also choose from another set of 17-inch light metal or take a size larger with 18-inch. The additional cost of those sets of wheels is €160 and €520 respectively. The tinted rear side windows and rear window are always present on the Tiguan.

Volkswagen is following a trend that is increasingly seen in the car world: recesses for ‘exhausts’ in the rear bumper, while the exhaust itself is behind the bumper and is directed downwards. LED headlights and taillights are available as standard, dynamic LED headlights are available as an option for €1,190. A light and rain sensor are also included in the standard equipment. To make it easier to get the Tiguan into the parking space, it is always equipped with front and rear parking sensors. You do have to unlock and lock the Tiguan with the key and the tailgate on the Life cannot be operated electrically.

Analog

Digital instruments are increasingly commonplace. Where the basic version of the Golf has embraced digitization, Volkswagen is taking it a bit easier with the Tiguan. The Life has analog counters with a color screen in the middle for the on-board computer. An 8-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone integration is standard, around that screen are a few buttons for operation. A little further down is the control panel for the climate control, whose temperature control is divided into three zones. Since the facelift, this is not about traditional buttons, but about a touch-sensitive panel in the style of the Golf and ID3.

The multifunction steering wheel of the Tiguan is covered with leather as standard, the furniture has a layer of fabric with a diamond pattern. The front seats are standard manually adjustable, optionally you can check the Ergo-Active front seats for €630. In that case you immediately receive the upholstery in ‘Art Velours’, which resembles Alcantara. Furthermore, the Tiguan has an automatically dimming interior mirror and a whole range of safety systems on board. For example, adaptive cruise control is standard, but it is also equipped with Lane Assist, pedestrian and fatigue detection. For things such as an emergency brake and blind spot assistant, you have to check the Assistance package of €1,040 again.

The Life is standard not very frivolously equipped, but by no means bare. In addition to the above options, the basic version also offers a panoramic roof (€1,220), a towbar with Trailer Assist (€1,120), a digital instrument panel (€490), the Executive package with integrated navigation and wireless charging for the smartphone (€1,160) and the winter package with a heated steering wheel and heated seats (€360). Where many brands exclude the basic version of many options, that is emphatically not the case with Volkswagen.
