With Pilot Assist, Volvo has had software and hardware available for years with which cars stay neatly within the lines and automatically keep their distance from vehicles in front. But the truly autonomous car is still a long way off, the brand expects. That says CEO Jim Rowan to Car Expert.

Volvo CEO Jim Rowan says in conversation with Auto Expert that there are actually only two types of autonomous driving. One where the car is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems and you have to keep your hands on the wheel, and one where you don’t have to keep your hands on the wheel. Rowan thus divides the five levels into which autonomous driving options are classified into two parts. According to the CEO, the time is not yet ripe for fully autonomous driving. So hands on the wheel.

According to the Volvo CEO, the technology to allow cars to drive fully autonomously is already available, but it is mainly legislation that makes it difficult to implement systems that enable fully autonomous driving. Rowan predicts that it will be some time before it will be possible to navigate traffic everywhere without hands on the wheel. “Autonomous driving in the city where there are schools and road works, that is still a long way off,” concludes the CEO.
