Which default browsers can you set in iOS 14 now?

In iOS 14 you can finally specify which browser you want to use by default. Previously, Safari was always the default browser, but now you can finally change that by choosing a third-party browser, such as Chrome from Google or Edge from Microsoft. You can also customize your default email app.

Limited offer

Unfortunately, you cannot set all browsers as your default choice. The browser developers must first update their apps. In addition, the apps must still run on Apple’s web browser engine WebKit. The operation and performance of all individual apps will therefore be basically the same. Your choice of a standard browser therefore mainly depends on which interface you like to work with and not so much on the way they render web pages, because this is the same for all browsers.

There are only a handful of browsers that you can set as the default choice. Currently only Chrome, Edge, Firefox and DuckDuckGo are supported. The iOS version of Brave is a noticeable absentee from the list, but the developer behind the browser would already have an update ready that Apple has yet to approve.

We looked up some other popular browsers ourselves, such as Opera Touch, Aloha and Tor, but they also don’t offer the option to designate them as the default choice.

Not without problems

The choice to adjust your preferred browser in the latest operating system for your iPhone does not always work well, according to reports. Some users report a bug in iOS 14 that reverts your default browser to Safari every time you restart your iPhone. Presumably, this bug will not be fixed until a future OS patch.

Also, keep in mind that future updates to browser apps may cause your default choice to be lost. After you update an app, check whether your favorite browser is still set as the preferred browser.

This is how you adjust your default browser

To change your default browser choice, go to the Settings app and scroll down until you find your favorite browser. Press the app and tap Default browser app. In this window you see all browsers that you can specify as the default choice. This way you can also adjust your default e-mail app.

For example, if you now click on a link from another app, such as WhatsApp or Gmail, Safari will no longer open, but the browser that you have set as your favorite.
