Winter tire test 2020

If you are going to buy new winter tires, you have to look carefully at what kind of meat you have in the cockpit. The market is in fact flooded with new brands, which do not always offer the level of safety that you can expect. In this tire test you can read which tires you should have.

The summer seemed to be almost endless, but soon it will really happen: winter is approaching. The hat, gloves and ice scraper can therefore be taken out of the closet again. Before that happens, it is not only important to add antifreeze to the windshield washer reservoir, but also to have the car fitted with the correct tires. That is, if you want to be on the safe side, because really often you don’t need winter tires in our country. As winters are generally mild, more and more people are opting for all-season tires. These are good alternatives for compact and medium-sized cars, but with an oversized sedan such as the BMW 5-series that we used in this test, we would still go for the traditional winter tires.

The purchase of this is still quite a puzzle, because the number of tire brands continues to increase. We purchased tires from more than 50 brands during our anonymous online purchasing round and from the tire trade. To get straight to the point: a third of those tires are not worth their money. They cause braking distances that are far too long, according to our first safety check. Twenty tires do not stop the car within 37 meters on wet roads from 80 km / h. This includes tires from brands such as Tracmax, Petlas, Wanli, Starmaxx and Zeetex.

After a braking test on a snowy road surface, the 20 best performing tires remain. These have been further tested for properties such as traction, cornering and braking distance on dry, wet and snowy road surfaces. Driving noise and service life are also included in the assessment.

Six tires have achieved the highest qualification ‘excellent’ this year. Overall winner is the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5. The top six also consists of the Bridgestone Blizzak LM 005, the Goodyear Ultragrip Performance +, the BF Goodrich G-Force Winter 2, the Kleber Krisalp HP3 and the Hankook Winter I * Cept Evo3.

The full results of all 51 winter tires and all test results including charts and graphs can be read this week in Techzle no. 43 (21-28 October), or available digitally at the bottom of this article.
