Giga panda from Turning Red now available in Google augmented reality

Something funny on Saturday, because Google has added another new animal to its augmented reality capabilities within the Google app. It is a giant little panda. Or just a really big red panda: give the animal a name, Mei from the Pixar film Turning Red can now be placed in your home.

Turning Red

The Pixar film, which has been on streaming service Disney+ for a week, revolves around a Chinese-Canadian girl who, like the Hulk, turns into a gigantic beast when she feels tense. Only it’s not green and ugly, but fluffy and cute. It is a small panda, related to the well-known black and white panda, but more resembling a fox. In the film her name is Mei and you can now place her in all its glory in your living room.

Big little panda on your couch

You do this by searching for ‘Turning Red’ within the Google app on your phone. Scroll down and you will already see it: “View Mei as a red panda in 3D”. If you then tap ‘View in 3D’, you will see the panda in 3D. Then you can also choose to tap ‘Show in your room’ and if you have given Google the correct permissions, you will see your living room (or the park, just where you are).

Then move your phone up and down slightly and a giant panda will appear on your screen. You can make it smaller by pinching it, but it is also possible to display Mei back to its original size. The panda can’t do much: she just dances back and forth in your screen, but it is certainly fun to try out if you have children. Although it is secretly quite funny even without children.

Augmented Reality

There are a lot of beasts to watch in this augmented reality way via the Google app. on this page from google you can see exactly which they are, including a pony, white shark, cheetah, emperor penguin, pomeranian and a hedgehog. But then a little less dancing and Pixar, and a little more serious and ‘real’. Have fun!
