Apple unveiled iOS 17, so we finally know what cool features are coming to your iPhone. Unfortunately, not all new features come to every iPhone.

Apple unveils iOS 17

At WWDC 2023, Apple announced iOS 17. It’s not a very big update, but it still brings a number of useful features to your iPhone. Like every year, the new iOS update is no longer coming to all iPhones. Are you curious whether your iPhone will soon have support for iOS 17? View the list of all iPhones on which iOS 17 can be installed soon.

Unfortunately, even if your iPhone is suitable for iOS 17, not all new features will come to your phone. Some of the latest features are only available for newer iPhones. Do you want to know which new features of iOS 17 your iPhone will get? We put them together for you.

iOS 17: Unfortunately, these useful features don’t come to every iPhone

1. Live Voicemail

In iOS 17, Live Voicemail comes to your iPhone. With the new function you will soon leave a voicemail in the form of a video. You can leave such a video if someone does not accept your FaceTime call, for example. In this way, sending a voicemail becomes much more personal than it is today.

Live Voicemail is a new feature in iOS 17 and is coming to all iPhones. However, not everyone can use the cool feature, because Live Voicemail is not released worldwide. Live Voicemail will only be available in the United States and Canada. It is not known whether the function will come to the Netherlands later.

2. 3D Reactions in FaceTime

In addition to Live Voicemail, FaceTime has another new feature in iOS 17. In the new iOS version, it is possible to give 3D responses during a video call via FaceTime. By making certain hand gestures, different effects are created. Think of hearts, confetti and fireworks.

3D Reactions will be released worldwide, but unfortunately not available on all iPhones with iOS 17 support. You must have an iPhone 12 or later to use the feature. 3D reactions are not available on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11 series.

3. FaceTime through Apple TV

In iOS 17, it’s finally possible to connect your iPhone to Apple TV during a FaceTime call. The video call can then be seen on the larger television screen. You place your iPhone under the television during the conversation, so that the better cameras on the back of the phone function as a webcam.

FaceTiming via Apple TV works with any iPhone that supports iOS 17, but doesn’t work with every generation of Apple TV. Only the second generation (2021) Apple TV 4K or newer will work with the new feature.

4. New AirDrop feature: NameDrop

One of the most useful new features for your iPhone in iOS 17 is NameDrop. The feature is an extension of AirDrop and is intended to quickly share contact information with another iPhone or Apple Watch. You do this with NameDrop by simply holding the iPhones together – or an iPhone and an Apple Watch.

NameDrop is coming with iOS 17 to every iPhone that supports the update. NameDrop is just not coming to all generations of Apple Watch. Only the Apple Watch Series 6 and later works with NameDrop.

5. Improved autocorrect in iOS 17

Does autocorrect sometimes not work properly on your iPhone? That will change with iOS 17, because on the basis of machine learning autocorrect is improved. Your iPhone will then learn from the way you type, making word correction in iOS 17 much more accurate and personalized.

This improved iOS 17 feature is coming to iPhone 12 and later. Autocorrect will soon work much more accurately with the following languages: Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hebrew, Korean, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish.

6. AirPods get more features

With iOS 17 on your iPhone, the AirPods also get additional options. Adaptive audio is a new listening mode for the AirPods. The function adjusts the noise reduction of the AirPods to the amount of noise in your environment. If you’re in a noisy room, the adaptive audio ensures that noise reduction blocks more sound.

In addition, your AirPods will soon recognize with Conversation Recognition when someone is talking to you. You can then hear that voice clearly when wearing AirPods, even with noise cancellation turned on. All of the new AirPods features are available on any iPhone that supports iOS 17. Unfortunately, Adaptive Audio and Call Recognition only work with the second-generation AirPods Pro.

7. “Hey Siri” is no longer in iOS 17

In iOS 17, Apple chooses to stop using “Hey Siri” and just use “Siri” instead. Earlier there were rumors that Apple was planning to delete ‘Hey’ and in iOS 17 the time has come. It remains to be seen whether this will cause Siri to go off unintentionally (much) more often. In addition, in iOS 17 you can ask Siri for several tasks in a row, without saying ‘Siri’ each time.

In the Netherlands, we will not find out for the time being whether Siri will go off unintentionally more often. The new way to address Siri only works in English. So in Dutch we keep saying ‘Hey, Siri’ for a while. Asking multiple tasks is also not yet available in Dutch.

8. Accessibility Feature: Point and Speak

In iOS 17, another new Accessibility feature is coming to your iPhone. Of Point and Speak is it possible to scan a piece of text with your camera, so that your iPhone then reads the text aloud. This is especially useful for people with visual impairments. They can then have text read from physical objects in space. Think of settings for an oven, for example.

For Point and Speak does your iPhone use the LiDAR scanner. This scanner is only incorporated in the Pro models of the iPhone. Therefore, the feature is only available in iOS 17 for the iPhone 12 Pro and all newer Pro models.

9. Standby turns your iPhone into an alarm clock

Another completely new feature for your iPhone in iOS 17 is the Standby mode. With the feature it will soon be possible to use your phone as a full-fledged alarm clock or support on your desk, for example. Your iPhone is then in a horizontal or vertical position and only shows information that you find important.

Standby is coming to all iPhones with support for iOS 17, but it doesn’t work the same on every phone. Do you have an iPhone 14 Pro (Max)? Then Standby with the always-on display is always active. With all older iPhones, Standby only works when the device is charging. The screen then goes out after a while, so that the Stand-by mode is not continuously visible.

This is when iOS 17 appears

If you have an iPhone 12 or later, you’re fine with the new iOS 17 update. Incidentally, it will be a while before iOS 17 appears, because Apple usually only releases the final update in the fall. The new iOS update will then be launched at the same time as the iPhone 15. This is expected to happen in the second or third week of September.
