Xiaomi presents high-end Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro with 108 megapixel camera

The Xiaomi Mi 10 price for the Netherlands has been announced. The smartphone appears here for 799 euros. Xiaomi also releases a better, more expensive Mi 10 Pro for 999 euros. You should know this.

Xiaomi scored well last year with the Mi 9 (review), a high-end smartphone from 449 euros. The device will receive follow-up in the form of the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro, which are more expensive and cost almost as much as the Samsung Galaxy S20 (899 euros), Huawei P40 Pro (999 euros) and iPhone 11 Pro (1159 euros).

Widescreen glass design

The Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro have exactly the same design, are the same size and weight and use the same screen. Xiaomi provides the Mi 10 (Pro) with a glass housing that can charge wirelessly with a power of 30W. That is faster than usual. The Mi 10 (Pro) has a USB-C port but lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack and a micro-SD slot.

The OLED screen measures 6.67 inches, shows a full HD resolution and contains a hole for the 20-megapixel selfie camera in the top left corner. The vertical screen edges are curved and an optical fingerprint scanner is behind the display.

The display uses a refresh rate of 90Hz, which means that the screen refreshes ninety times per second. The software therefore feels smoother, faster than on a 60Hz screen. Many premium smartphones that come out around this time have a 90Hz or even 120Hz screen. A higher refresh rate reduces – not surprisingly – the battery life.

The Xiaomi Mi 10

The best hardware

The Xiaomi Mi 10 (Pro) runs on the latest, fastest Snapdragon 865 processor with 8GB of RAM. Xiaomi releases the Mi 10 with 128GB or 256GB storage memory, the Pro version has 256GB as standard. Both devices support 5G internet, which will become available in the Netherlands in the summer, and NFC. They also have an infrared sensor to control suitable equipment.

Battery and charging

Then a difference: the Mi 10 has a 4780 mAh battery, while the Pro version has a slightly smaller 4500 mAh battery. The battery of the Pro version charges faster via the USB-C cable: with 50W compared to 30W. By the way, Xiaomi puts a 65W plug in the box of the Mi 10 Pro, and therefore no 50W plug. Why is unclear.

As mentioned before, both smartphones can charge wirelessly with 30W. In addition, they can donate their power to charge another device wirelessly, for example your AirPods or a Samsung smartwatch.

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

Cameras

On the back of the Mi 10 is a 108 megapixel camera. It compresses four pixels into one pixel to take (better) 27 megapixel photos. The Mi 10 Pro has the same camera, but thanks to a slightly better lens it can catch a little more light – useful in the dark. The Mi 10 has a 13-megapixel wide-angle lens, compared to a 20-megapixel wide-angle lens on the Pro version.

The Mi 10 also has a 2 megapixel macro lens and a 2 megapixel depth camera for portrait photos. Those two lenses are missing on the Mi 10 Pro. However, this phone has two zoom cameras of 12 and 8 megapixel, good for 2 times optical zoom (without loss of quality) or 10 times hybrid zoom (with little loss of quality). Both smartphones can film in 8K resolution.

Availability

The Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro will be available in the Netherlands from April 15. Xiaomi releases the Mi 10 in the colors gray and green, while the Mi 10 Pro appears in the gray and white. The 128GB version of the Mi 10 will cost 799 euros, for the 256GB variant you pay 899 euros. Coolblue is the only retailer to sell the Mi 10. The suggested retail price of the Mi 10 Pro is 999 euros and the phone comes out only at MediaMarkt.

It is striking that the smartphones in Europe are considerably more expensive than in China, where the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro cost 500 and 600 euros.
