Children are online at a young age for all kinds of activities, and then they automatically come into contact with passwords. We give four important tips for parents to teach their children.
Passwords and children
November 24 is ‘Change Your Password Day’ and you know what you have to do today: change those passwords. The best thing is that you make a generator for secure passwords for that like these. Androidworld already gave you all the tips in this article that you can use to check the security of your passwords and make them more secure. We also discussed seven bad password habits.
However, it is also important to pay due attention to children who play online games or explore the internet. Teach them right away about the importance of secure passwords and how to handle them smartly. You will even find that it is a lot of fun to come up with fun and strong passwords together with the child when they let their imagination run wild.
1. Choose a passphrase
You need passwords quite often, which is why children and adults alike tend to come up with short words that are easy to remember. For that reason, words are often used that contain personal information or numbers that are easy to guess.

Below are some examples of such passwords that you should not use:
- Joepjanssens123 (The child’s name is Joep Janssens)
- Password111
- Pukkie54321 (Pukkie is the name of the pet that is everywhere in the photo online)
It is much better not to work with a password, but with a passphrase. That is, you have a much longer password because it is actually a sentence of single words. The best thing is that the word order doesn’t sound logical. As for the numbers that are often needed, use handy mnemonics. For example, you explain that your child has 10 fingers and two hands, so the number combination is ‘102’.
When you put those tips together, you get to the examples below for passphrases:
- Bluedogbeigeair102
- Papadrinktsenseocoffee061
- speedy slow car419

2. Two-step verification
Having a password is one thing, but it’s much better to explain to your kids right away that there is a second obstacle besides the password to prevent naughty people from logging into their favorite game. With two-step verification, when you log in, you first receive a text message with a code before you get access. If your child does not have a telephone yet, that message will reach mom or dad.
Two-step verification, or 2SV for short, is considered the standard for good security online. That is why Google recently decided that it will even activate 2SV automatically on Google accounts, because the technique is more secure than a weak password that is used over and over again.
3. Use a password manager
If a child is already quite proficient with a telephone or PC and in the meantime already has a lot of passwords to remember, it is wise to use a password manager. Google has such a system built in on Chrome and Android, but you can also consult other well-known services. Here you will find an overview of four excellent apps.
The advantage of a password manager is that it only takes one strong password that you have to remember yourself, and the rest happens automatically. That’s pure ease of use and such a tool can generate strong passwords itself.
Is using a password manager not an option yet, and will it be difficult for your child to remember the passwords themselves? Then it’s better to get started with an old-fashioned trick. Give your child a booklet in which he or she writes down all the passwords, and teach him or her to put that booklet away in an agreed place.
4. Good Habits Online
Finally, there are some general rules of thumb that you should teach your children as soon as possible. If he or she uses a computer at a location outside the house, it is better not to log in to that one website with fun coloring pages and games. You never know who is watching or if the password is accidentally saved.

Also say that the password is not intended for friends or others who ask for it, and that it is not a good idea to share it in a message. In addition, it is a good idea to come up with new, original passwords together with your child every now and then as an activity, because it is good to change passwords regularly. If you no longer use a game, app or program, the account may also be deleted. Also say that you always want to help with that.
