4 things you should know about Command & Conquer: Rivals

Command & Conquer Rivals is now in the App Store. In this game you compete against other players in the well-known C&C universe. You should know this.

Command & Conquer Rivals is now available for download

When Electronic Arts announced Command & Conquer: Rivals earlier this year, the response was poor. Gamers have been waiting for a new part in the series for a long time, and not a smartphone game. Even when the makers said they simply wanted to make a cool strategy game for smartphones and fans should give it a chance, people remained skeptical.

Rivals is now available for download in the App Store. We got to work and can answer the question of whether you should indeed give this game a chance.

Does Rivals play like the old Command & Conquer?

Rivals is definitely not the game you may be used to from Command & Conquer, but it does have a lot of familiar elements. For example, you place buildings in your base to create specific units, collect tiberium as a resource and send your troops out to destroy the opponent’s base.

However, the scale in Rivals is a lot smaller than in the old Command & Conquer games. Everything revolves around two small bases, a missile silo in the middle and your troops. Still, the game is much more than Clash Royale with a Command & Conquer skin.

What happens in the jars?

Three clearly marked zones are visible around the missile silo. The goal is to gain the upper hand within these zones. If you have more men in the zones as soon as the timer of the missile has expired, the missile shoots towards the opponent’s base. Do that a few times and you have won.

Keeping these zones occupied is not easy. Both parties send different men into the field and you just have to have the right units to fight against them. For example, you can compete well with soldiers with a buggy, but it is of no use to a tank.

Unlike Clash Royale, for example, the units do not move by themselves. You send them onto the field and show them where to stand or who to fight. You do that per group of units, so you don’t have to fiddle.

The result is short, but intense games where you constantly try to outsmart the opponent. Because you can buy units almost immediately, the games are fun to play right away.

What about in-app purchases?

The game does its best to make you spend money, of course. If you win games, you will earn different currencies for improving your army. You also earn new units through cards. If you pay, it all goes a bit faster.

However, payment is not necessary. For example, you can do the daily challenges to earn extra stuff. Whether that will be enough in the long term remains to be seen. Electronic Arts has a bad reputation in that area.
