5 iOS features coming to your iPhone in 2023

Happy New Year! The time has come: 2022 is over and the start of 2023 is here. From the editors we wish you a fantastic year and of course we look forward to everything Apple will bring us. Not only in the field of hardware such as the iPhone, but also in the field of software such as iOS.

In that respect, editor-in-chief Mark Hofman is very much looking forward to the next twelve months. Even if it is already, because Apple is going to bring a lot of new functionalities to the iPhone with iOS.

Five iOS features coming to your iPhone

Last year, the iPhone received a nice upgrade with the arrival of iOS 16. Not only the latest model, but also older versions of the smartphone received the necessary additions and improvements. Something that will also be the case in 2023.

Not only because of the arrival of iOS 17 later this year, but also certainly because of the system that we were presented with in 2022. There are still plenty of extensions and additions that iOS 16 has in store for us. And I personally look forward to that.

To clarify what you can expect in 2023, I have listed five functionalities for you.

#1 Next generation Apple CarPlay

During WWDC 2022, Apple introduced a new version of CarPlay. This way it is possible to connect your iPhone to the infotainment system of your car. Listening to music, using apps and navigating to your destination is simply made a bit easier.

The new version goes a step further and practically controls your entire car in terms of software. An operating system from Apple for your mechanical four-legged friend, so to speak. Only in 2022 we didn’t really know when exactly consumers could get away with it.

What we do know is that the first vehicles, including BMW and Audi, will be provided in the last quarter of 2023. Something to be excited about, if you ask me.

#2 Security keys on your iPhone

At the end of 2022, developers got access to the beta version of iOS 16.3. This is the next update that consumers with an iPhone will receive. According to Apple itself, it will appear in early 2023 and will be equipped with a handy security function.

Security Key for Apple ID, that’s the name Apple mentions. This is a functionality that relies on physical security keys. This makes it possible to strengthen the two-factor authorization of your iPhone. In addition to entering a password or scanning your face via FaceID, it is therefore also required to use the hardware key.

Apple doesn’t seem to be planning to market the hardware itself.

#3 iOS offers better protection

In addition to the addition of Security Key for Apple ID, we will get another security feature in 2023. In the United States, the function already appeared with the iOS 16.2 update, but the rest of the world has to wait a while.

Advanced Data Protection makes iCloud’s end-to-end encryption better. This way, not only the data on your iPhone itself, but also in the cloud is better protected. This includes backups, Reminders, Photos, Notes, and more.

As mentioned, the feature is currently already available in the United States. Consumers with iOS 16.2 or macOS 13.1, for example, can already use it. The rest of the world can take into account the arrival of the addition in early 2023.

#4 Satellite emergency calls on your iPhone

Apple has another iOS functionality that is currently limited available. Consumers in the United States and Canada can make emergency calls via satellite thanks to the iPhone 14. Later countries such as France, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom were added.

We don’t know exactly which countries will have access to the functionality in 2023, but Apple will roll out the feature further at the beginning of this year. So if you don’t have access to an active WiFi connection or mobile network, you can still call in case of an emergency.

As soon as you activate your new iPhone 14, you get free access to the functionality for two years. After that you have to pay for it.

#5 iOS brings notifications from the browser

Safari, the standard browser that can be found on the iPhone and iPad, will also have a nice function at the beginning of this year. iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 will receive support for notifications in a new version.

The notifications will look familiar to you as they look the same as the ones you get from applications.
