5 tips to take your Sonos speakers to the next level

Sonos is definitely not one of the cheapest brands when it comes to audio, but it can compete with the absolute high-end. If you have invested anyway, these are some handy tricks to get more out of your system.

Of course there are audio brands that easily run into the thousands of euros. That’s why Sonos is an excellent and relatively affordable alternative if you want excellent sound. With some simple tips, your speakers or soundbar will sound even better.

Sonos speakers all over your home

If you have a bit of a budget, it is advisable to get one more speaker (or even more) at home. It is quite easy to connect everything together and to determine the settings for each speaker. These five tips will take you a long way.

#1 Combine multiple speakers

Sonos speakers have a huge advantage anyway: they are easy to connect to each other. For example, you get sound everywhere in the house, or you can make a setup for excellent stereo or surround sound. For the latter it is necessary that you have two of the same speakers and a soundbar for surround.

Adding speakers is a piece of cake in the Sonos app. To do this, tap settings at the bottom of the app, then System and you can add a product there.

#2 Use a Boost if your network is not good

If you still want to connect multiple systems in different parts of the house, it may well be that your WiFi is not strong enough.

A Boost offers a solution, because it increases your WiFi reception. This is also easy to add in the settings. It is for sale here for 119 euros.

#3 Use Sonos Trueplay for the best sound

If you really want to get the best sound from your Sonos speakers, it is recommended to use Trueplay. This is a way for the speakers to determine their exact location in a room.

To do this, go to settings in the app again. Then choose System, then select the room and you will find Trueplay here. Please note: this option only works on an iOS device. If you have the Sonos Move or the Sonos Roam, you don’t have to do anything. Those systems automatically already have Trueplay.

Incidentally, both the Era 100 and Era 300 offer two options for Trueplay tuning. The first is advanced tuning, which also requires an iOS device.

There’s also quick tuning, which uses the built-in microphones to match the speakers to the room they’re in.

#4 A sharper ear? The equalizer settings help

You may very well not appreciate (or use) Trueplay. Then the equalizer settings offer solace. Sonos speakers have quite a lot of bass, so if you want to change that, here’s how.

Go to the app again and choose System. Here you can select the room where one or more Sonos speakers are located. You will also find the equalizer there. There you can find all settings that can be tweaked properly per room (and therefore speaker).

#5 Don’t piss off your neighbors with the Sonos volume limiter

In an almost childish enthusiasm, it may be good that you turn your sound a little too loud. To avoid getting complaining neighbors, you can simply use a volume limit.

You will of course also find this in the app and it is in the list of options per room, and therefore per speaker.

All in all, Sonos speakers not only offer good sound, but also great opportunities to expand and tweak. This is how a concert on Spotify sounds as if you were there yourself.
