The Philips 55OLED807 includes a 55-inch OLED screen, Ambilight and Android TV. What else does it offer and at what price?
If you are looking for a good TV, you can choose from many brands and models. Philips is of course one of the best-known brands in TV land and we have previously tested the Philips 55OLED805, for example. In this article you will find the review of the Philips 55OLED807, a beautiful TV with a 55-inch OLED screen, Ambilight, Android TV and a new P5 image processor.
Design and connections
The Philips 55OLED807 is a beautifully designed TV, thanks in part to the thin metal edge and aluminum base. Without this foot it measures 122.5 x 70.1 x 6.8 cm and ‘heavy’ 18.3 kg, the foot itself is about 3 kg. Because many TVs have a nice thin bezel, they have to distinguish themselves in terms of design in the base. And Philips has thought carefully about this: instead of small ‘feet’, it has now opted for one beautiful glossy (swivel) foot that places the TV about 7 cm higher. As a result, you can easily place a soundbar in front of this TV and you can easily rotate the TV a bit without moving the entire TV. Although the viewing angle is good, it is of course nice if you can turn the TV if you want. At the back are the connections, including 2x HDMI 2.1 (with 1 eARC) and 2x HDMI 2.0, all of which have arc support. Nevertheless, I prefer to see 4x HDMI 2.1, because I use all 4 HDMI connections. There is also 3x USB, Ethernet and power supply. Incidentally, the 55OLED807 is also very suitable for gamers thanks to VRR, AMD Freesync and NVIDIA G-sync. In addition, there is the gaming dashboard on which you immediately see whether, for example, HDR10 + is enabled and on which you can quickly adjust a number of settings.(article continues below the image)

Screen and image quality
The Philips OLED807 series is available in different sizes, namely 48, 55, 65 and 77 inches. However, the Dutch Philips site only indicates the availability of the 55- and 65-inch version. All versions offer the same specifications and they are excellent for this 807 series. First of all, the refresh rate of 120 Hz, which ensures that the images on the TV run smoothly. TVs with a lower refresh rate sometimes show stutters, but that is not the case with the 4K 55OLED807, which has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. Secondly, the fact that Philips uses new OLED EX panels for the 807 series. These provide, among other things, great color reproduction and range, thanks to the support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG and HDR10 +. If we look at how well black and white is displayed, then this TV turns out to score really well: white is really white and black is really black. The images of the 55OLED807 are also beautifully clear and you also have beautiful images during the day.
Ambilight
For many people, Ambilight is an (important) reason for buying a Philips TV. The Philips 55OLED807 is equipped with Ambilight 4, which means that each side is equipped with Ambilight. With other models you only have Ambilight on three sides behind the TV, but Philips now also provides the bottom with Ambilight. If you have mounted your TV on the wall, everything around the TV will now color nicely, without delay. Also new is the Aurora function where you can set Ambilight to show only one color as mood lighting. You can combine that with, for example, atmospheric or art images, which we mainly know from the Samsung TV The Frame. Incidentally, you can also set Ambilight in such a way that they color along with the rhythm of the music.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that with Ambilight Plus the LEDs are controlled individually instead of 3 LEDs at the same time, for better matching of the ‘color glow’.
Audio and remote control
Personally, I always find the audio of a TV less important when choosing a TV. That’s because I use an external audio system, namely a soundbar, subwoofer and 2 rear speakers from Sonos. But of course that doesn’t apply to everyone, so we certainly also look at the audio of the 55OLED807.
Philips has done that well with the 4.1 audio system with 70 watts. Partly thanks to the support for Dolby Atmos and DTS HD, the sound of this TV can even be called excellent, both for the high, middle and low tones and many music genres if you want to listen to it. The remote control is comfortable to hold, but the buttons are too close together. This allows you to just press the wrong button, something we often encounter with Philips remote controls. Positive, on the other hand, is the fact that the buttons are equipped with light. That makes a difference if you want to use the remote control in the dark, because many people like to watch movies and series in a dark (living) room. Also positive is that the microphone function works well: I use it a lot for quickly finding a program, for example.
AndroidTV 11
The Philips OLED807 has Android TV 11. Users with an Android smartphone will be able to use the menu easily, but the menu is also easy for people with an iPhone. Android TV offers countless apps, including of course the apps of well-known streaming services. In addition, you can set the Home screen to your liking. The built-in Google Cast is also nice, so you don’t need a Chromecast.
P5 processor
Philips has equipped the OLED807 series with a MediaTek MT5895 chipset with a renewed P5 processor. This does its job well thanks to the 4 cores and 3 GB of RAM, which is also reflected in the good upscaling and noise reduction. If you want to control more in terms of contrast, Philips makes that possible via the good Ambient Intelligence light sensor. This allows you to set the contrast yourself via three menu options. Via Eye care you can adjust the brightness of the image to the environment (or have it adjusted), with Dark Detail Optimization you get to see dark parts brighter and Color Temperature Optimization should ensure cooler images when there is a lot of ambient light.
Installation
After some short screw work, it is firmly attached and the television is stable and immediately level on its base, although you can still adjust this with the screws. You can also hang the TV on the wall.
Incidentally, Philips also already has the new one OLED808 series released, with the main differences from OLED807 series:
• New 42inch size in 2023 within OLED808 series
• Better picture quality and higher peak brightness
• Due to improved OLED panel and P5 AI Intelligent engine
• Movable foot / swivel stand design
• Google TV updates
• New generation Ambilight
• Imax enhanced certification – Image and sound
Price and availability
The OLED807 series is available in various sizes and these are the recommended prices: € 1,699 for the 48OLED807, € 1,999 for the 55OLED807, € 2,699 for 65OLED807 and € 4,499 for the 77OLED807. Please note, these are recommended retail prices. If you look online for these devices, you will immediately save many hundreds of euros and even more than 1000 euros.
Conclusion
The Philips 55OLED807 is an excellent choice if you’re looking for an OLED TV. The OLED screen gives a beautifully clear and sharp image, it is nice and fast, has a beautiful design and many connections, is equipped with four-sided Ambilight, Android TV and all HDR standards. Add to that the (relatively) good audio with Dolby Atmos and a good price-quality ratio and then it is only logical that it gets 4.5 stars out of 5 stars.
