The new Samsung Galaxy S24 series is out and consists of the regular S24, the S24+ and the S24 Ultra. Read the specifications of these smartphones and the capabilities of the cameras here.
On Tuesday, January 9, during the CES in Las Vegas, I was able to try out the new Samsung Galaxy S24, the S24+ and the S24 Ultra. Galaxy S24
The Samsung Galaxy S24 is the regular and smallest model in the S24 series with a 6.2-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen. It has an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz, where you can switch between 1 and 120 Hz. It is protected by the new and sturdier Gorilla Glass Armor from manufacturer Corning and is more resistant to falls from great heights. It measures 70.6 x 147 x 7.6 mm and weighs about 167 grams.
The European version of the S24 is equipped with the Exynos 2400 chip, 8 GB of RAM (working memory) and 128 GB or 256 GB of storage memory. You can charge the 4000mAh battery with 25 watts.
The three cameras on the back are placed one below the other: a 50 MP main camera, 12 MP wide-angle lens and a 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The selfie camera on the front has 10MP.
In terms of software, they are all equipped with Android 14 and in terms of peak brightness they have 2,600 nits and also better visibility in the outdoors with Vision Booster.
Galaxy S24+
The S24+ is the slightly larger brother and has many of the same specs that I describe above. It is of course slightly larger at 75.9 x 158.5 x 7.7 mm and is slightly heavier at about 196 grams. And of course it has a larger screen with its 6.7-inch screen and a higher resolution with 3088 x 1440 pixels (QHD+). In terms of RAM, it is equipped with 12 GB and in terms of storage memory, it is also available in 256 or 512 GB. Finally, it also has a larger battery with 4900 mAh that you can charge with 45 watts.
Galaxy S24 Ultra
Naturally, Samsung’s flagship is the superlative in the S24 series. For example, it has a 6.8-inch screen, a 5000mAh battery, measures 79 x 162.3 x 8.6 mm and weighs about 232 grams. It has another more economical processor: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. It has 12 GB of RAM on board and in terms of storage memory you can choose from 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB.
Especially in the field of cameras, it steals the show with its 4 cameras on the back, two of which are telephoto lenses. The main camera has a 200MP camera sensor, a 50MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, a 12MP wide-angle lens and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.
Making pictures
The ProVisual Engine of the Galaxy S24 series includes useful AI tools. This starts from preparing a photo to sharing it on social media. No more shaky, grainy photos taken from far away. The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Quad Tele System, with the 50MP sensor and the new 5x optical zoom lens, delivers optical quality at zoom levels of 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x thanks to the Adaptive Pixel Sensor.
The Nightography options have also been further improved. Photos and videos taken with the Galaxy S24 Space Zoom are beautiful in (practically) all conditions, even when zoomed in. The Galaxy S24 devices use gyroscope information to distinguish between the movements of the filmmaker and those of the subject. This ensures noise removal and clear videos – even in the dark and from far away.
After the photos are taken, simple adjustments can be made using the innovative Galaxy AI editing tools. Edit Suggestion uses Galaxy AI to suggest the right adjustments for each photo. For those who want even more creative control and freedom, there is Generative Edit. This allows parts of a photo background to be filled in. If a photo is crooked, AI fills in the edges. Does an object need to be shifted a little bit for the perfect position? AI allows the subject to be moved and a suitable background is created in the original location. When an action video needs to be slowed down, the new Instant Slow-mo can generate additional frames based on motion to slow down action moments with a more detailed image.
Price and availability
The Galaxy S24 series will be available from January 31. The Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra are available from €899, €1,149 and €1,449 respectively.
