Sony X90L FA LED 2

Introduction
The Sony X90L 4K television is part of the Bravia XR line and is priced in the mid-range segment. To achieve this, Full Array LED technology is used, which is somewhere between standard LCD and Mini-LED/OLED. With a Full Array LED TV, the LEDs are divided into zones behind the image panel. This makes it possible to control the exposure more precisely (local dimming) resulting in a higher contrast and therefore a more vivid image.

Performance
This model is available in 55, 65, 75, 85 and even 98 inches, we are testing the 65-inch model. It is suitable for wall and foot mounting. The feet are height adjustable for placement of a soundbar. The elongated slender feet can be placed on the outside or slightly inward. The slightly glossy screen looks sleek with a very narrow aluminum edge. All connections are located at the back, center below 2 buttons for direct operation. A narrow minimalist remote control is included without integration with any TV box.

At the back we see 4x HDMI, of which 2 with HDMI 2.1 and 1 with eARC, further connections for network, cable, TV box, DBC, SPDIF, 3.5mm audio and 2x USB.

Image
A Cognitive Processor XR with the Contrast Booster controls the backlight of the Full Array LED zones for contrast in bright and dark environments. The brightness is high and this is particularly visible in HDR mode. The maximum image refresh of 4K at 120 Hz, a very fast response time, the availability of G-sync/VRR and a separate gaming menu is very attractive for gamers.

SDR, or the standard TV channels, also provides a clear and sharp image, but lacks the HDR sparkle. We also miss the inky black of the OLED TV and you have to take the viewing angle into account for optimal picture. The upscaling to 4K works great. There are many (pre)settings to adjust the image, the out of the box settings, however, already give an excellent result. The integrated media server for direct playback via USB, NAS, etc. is somewhat slow and unstable, but that function works well via VLC, Kodi, Plex, etc.

Sound and Android TV
The sound is clear and clearly understandable, but it lacks deep bass. Many spatial versions such as DTS and Dolby are supported, but only come into their own with a soundbar or AV amplifier.

Android TV version 10 is available and can work with voice control. Apps can be installed from the Google App store. The operation runs smoothly. There is also support for Airplay and Homekit.

Conclusion
Complete and excellent mid-range all-round TV with a sharp, accurate image and high clarity, especially with HDR images. SDR is also displayed well, but lacks the HDR benefits. The refined XR technique provides natural and stable images. The recommended retail price is high, but the street price has now dropped to an attractive level under pressure from the competition.
