20 years ago, AVM presented the first FRITZ!Box at the Cebit computer fair. Read here 20 years of history and where the name Fritz comes from.
AVM has been offering many products for a fast broadband connection and smart home network for a long time, such as the AVM Fritz!Box 5590 Fiber. For example, on March 18, 2004, AVM presented the first FRITZ!Box at the famous Cebit computer fair in Germany, so that people could use the Internet more easily at home and they still do so to this day. You can now surf the internet safely and quickly, make phone calls, there is fast and stable WiFi for streaming TV and films and you can play online games and work from home. Since its debut, the FRITZ!Box with its ‘all-in-one device’ principle has proven to be a success. Since 2004, AVM has developed approximately 90 models and produced more than 60 million devices in Germany and Europe. From its inception with DSL with a maximum of 8 Mbit/s, the FRITZ!Box has continued to develop and now also supports fiber optic connections up to 10 Gbit/s.
20 years of innovation
With the FRITZ!Box, AVM has been offering a combination of hardware and software, versatile functions, easy installation and operation and regular free updates for 20 years. The FRITZ!Box supports any broadband technology, enables Wi-Fi with a long range, offers a complete telephone system and many options for setting up a smart home network. It also offers everyday functions such as parental controls, a hotspot for guests or settings for video calls when you work from home.
Furthermore, a FRITZ!Box can be set up in just a few steps and the user interface is designed to be clear and easy to understand for everyone. Both beginners and experienced users benefit from the many setting options and extensive analysis tools. In addition, the free FRITZ! apps extend the functional range of the FRITZ!Box.
The FRITZ!Box also offers its own fully closed firewall, VPN and parental controls. The FRITZ!Box’s own cloud solution ensures secure access to important documents, photos and videos when you’re on the go. Furthermore, the automatic updates ensure that users can surf safely and stably on all networks.
There is no need for a range of different devices such as a modem, WiFi router and smart home hub, because FRITZ!Box users get everything in one device. Lower power consumption options, such as energy saving mode, are included. The same goes for the regular and free updates. This means that FRITZ!Box users can enjoy new features or use the device as a mesh repeater many years after purchase instead of having to keep replacing or throwing away the router.
What gives the FRITZ!Box its name?
The brand FRITZ! has been around for over 30 years and the FRITZ!Box for 20 years. It started in 1995 with the FRITZ!Card for ISDN. Since then, AVM has wanted to make complicated network technology simple for everyone: the idea is that everyone can use the products easily and simply. That is why a product name was sought that was personal, conveyed accessibility and stood for ease of use and understandable technology. The name Fritz is uncomplicated and fits the company whose headquarters are located in Berlin. After FRITZ! and FRITZ!Card in 1995, the name FRITZ!Box was the obvious choice in 2004: everything you need for a control center in the digital home is available in one box: the FRITZ!Box.
