1: Sideloading: Installing iPhone applications outside the App Store

If you want to install apps on your iPhone or iPad, you must download them from the App Store. This has changed since iOS 17.4. Apple users in the EU will soon be able to install iPhone apps outside the Apple App Store through sideloading.
The tech company thus complies with European legislation that requires multiple installation options. In a news report, Apple announced the changes so that developers are aware of what to expect. The new options have been available to users in the 27 EU countries since March 5, 2024, but developers must first offer alternative App Stores.
2: Set default web browser on iPhone, iPad or Mac

Since iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, it has been possible to use another standard web browser on your iPhone or iPad instead of Safari. The obligation to use Apple’s own browser has therefore expired for some time, but that was not enough for the EU.
In accordance with the Digital Markets Act, Apple in the EU must actively notify users about changes to default web browsers. That is why since iOS 17.4 you have been shown suggestions to set a different browser.
3: iOS 17.4 adds 15.1 emoji update for iPhone, iPad and Mac

Emoji lovers pay attention, because new emoticons have been announced. Unicode Consortium, the creators of the Emojis, announced the Emoji 15.1 update last summer. The new emoticons were added in the spring of 2024.
The update is limited to 10 brand new emojis that you will soon be able to send and use, including Lime, Shaking Head (vertical and horizontal), Brown Mushroom, Fenix ​​and more. The new emoticons can be used since iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4, watchOS 10.4 and macOS Sonoma 14.4.
4: Alternative App Store: Stores to purchase and download applications for iPhone

Since iOS 17.4, Apple has made it possible in the EU to purchase, download and install applications via an alternative App Store. It is then possible to make purchases outside the official Apple App Store via the app stores.
Apple is undoubtedly not happy with this change, but European legislation has obliged the company to enable alternative App Stores for iPhone. These stores are not mandatory on the iPad and are therefore not available. We explain how you can use an alternative App Store.
5: Check comprehensive battery condition and status including charging cycles

Since iOS 17.4, iPhone 15 (Plus) and iPhone 15 Pro (Max) users can request extensive information about the battery condition of their device. This not only shows the maximum capacity, but also charging cycles, production date and more.
This information has been present since iOS 17.0, but was hidden in Settings â–¸ General â–¸ About â–¸ Battery. Since iOS 17.4, you can find this information directly in the battery settings on your iPhone.
