Control AirPods Max via the Digital Crown and noise control button

As with the AirPods and AirPods Pro, you can also control the AirPods Max, so you can quickly pause, skip a song or consult Siri. With the in-ear AirPods you have to use pinch movements and sensors, but the Max actually has physical buttons.

You can make various adjustments using the media control (Digital Crown) and noise control button. We explain what the options are and how you can adjust the buttons if necessary.

Control AirPods Max

Media controller (Digital Crown)

  • Press once to play, pause or answer a call
  • Press twice to go to the next song
  • Press three times to go to the previous song
  • Press and hold to activate Siri
  • Turn to change the volume

Noise control button

  • Press once to switch between noise control and transparency mode
  • Press and hold to activate pairing mode

Customize AirPods Max buttons

Of course you can customize the buttons so that you can, for example, disable the use of the transparency mode. You can also change the direction of the Digital Crown so that you can adjust the volume in the opposite direction.

Pair your AirPods Max with your iPhone or iPad and navigate to Settings â–¸ Bluetooth â–¸ tap the i button next to the AirPods. Under ‘Button toggles’, choose the options you want and open ‘Digital Crown’ to adjust the media control.

You can also change this via a Mac with macOS Big Sur or newer by connecting the Max to your Mac and navigating to  â–¸ System Preferences â–¸ Bluetooth. Click on ‘Options’ at the Max and adjust the desired options.
