Do you own the Apple Watch Series 8, SE (2nd generation), Ultra or newer? Then you can use a new function to save battery power during a workout.
You can use a special energy saving mode for Apple Watch that ensures that you can continue to use the smart watch, but the battery is spared. In addition, for some Watch models it is also possible to save battery with fewer GPS and heart rate measurements during Apple Watch workout.
Save battery during Apple Watch workout
Since watchOS 9.1, you can use a new energy saving feature on an Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Apple Watch Ultra or later. The ‘Less GPS and heart rate readings’ option extends battery life during outdoor walking, outdoor running, and hiking workouts.
During these activities, the frequency of heart rate and GPS measurements is reduced so that less demand is placed on the battery. Normally, the Apple Watch continuously measures heart rate and location. In addition, split times and segments are also disabled.
Enable fewer GPS and heart rate measurements
- Open Settings on your Apple Watch
- Navigate to ‘Workout’
- Enable the ‘Less GPS and heart rate readings’ option

Of course, you can also adjust these settings on the paired iPhone via the Apple Watch app â–¸ My Watch â–¸ Workout.
Good to know, these measurements are only disabled during standard outdoor walking, outdoor running, and walking workouts. This mode does not apply to other types of workouts or to custom workouts, with or without target pace.
