Since iOS 17.2, iPadOS 17.2, macOS 14.2 and tvOS 17.2, Apple has adapted the TV app with an additional sidebar for Apple TV. This makes it easier to consult Apple TV+ series and films and there is a clearer distinction.
iTunes Movies was added to the TV app for Apple TV and Apple has also merged components in the Store on other platforms. Several navigation buttons have also been updated, including the symbol for ‘Watch now’ and an icon has been added to the ‘library’ tab.
TV app in short
The Apple TV app was specially developed by Apple and, in addition to iTunes Movies, also includes tv+. In some countries, including the United States, you can also link the TV app to your TV provider and the app is packed with additional TV channels from media channels including HBO. In the Netherlands and Belgium the offer is limited, and in addition to iTunes Movies and tv+, you can activate the TV channels MLS Season Pass or Noggin, among others.
The Apple TV app is available on the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV and since macOS Catalina on the Mac. In addition, the TV app can also be used on an Apple TV 3 and various streaming sticks, smart TVs and streaming boxes. Most of the changes can be found in the TV app for Apple TV. This now has a navigation column instead of a navigation bar at the top of the screen. The column contains many more parts and is more clearly laid out.
- Open the TV app
- Swipe left, all the way up, or press the back button on the Siri Remote
- The sidebar opens
You will immediately see an overview of all components, so you have immediate access to the Apple TV+ offer, the Store, your own library, etc. At the bottom of the column you will find linked services such as Amazon Prime or HBO Max. Switch user
At the top of the sidebar you will find your Memoji, profile photo or initials. By navigating here you can immediately switch profiles.
End for iTunes Movie app
With the arrival of the updated TV app, Apple has also said goodbye to the iTunes TV Shows and iTunes Movies app. Both components have now been added to the Store for TV app. Please note, in the Netherlands and Belgium you can only use Movies.
Look now and library
Apple has replaced the ‘Watch Now’ tab with ‘Home’, where you will find personal suggestions and items you are currently viewing. Home is not only focused on tv+, but also other streaming services that you have linked to the TV app. For example, you can start an Amazon Prime series via ‘Home’.
Finally, the library has been updated and Apple has added symbols to the categories so that you can navigate through your media even faster.
