Software-wise, the smart smoke detector has support for Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. An interesting option because it allows you, for example, to switch on your smart (Hue) lighting at the entrance doors. This allows you to create a light path towards the exit if smoke is detected.
10 years of sensor and battery life
The optical smoke sensor of the Netatmo has a standard lifespan of 10 years, as is the case with every smoke detector. After this, the correct functioning of the sensor can no longer be guaranteed and the smoke detector must be replaced.
The smoke detector is equipped with two lithium-ion batteries that you cannot replace. The company has consciously chosen this because it guarantees the safety of the product. The batteries last 10 years with normal use, the same lifespan as the sensor. After installation, you won’t have to worry about it for 10 years.
Installation of the smoke detector
Both the installation and setting of the Netatmo smoke detector are quite simple and can be done by anyone.
A mounting plate, screws and plugs are included for mounting on the ceiling or on a wall. There is a marking line on the mounting plate that indicates how best to place it. The smoke detector then hangs nice and straight and the light gray Netatmo logo is then in the right direction, very neat. Never place a smoke detector in a bathroom, kitchen or garage, but in an adjacent room. This prevents false alarms.
Set up via the Netatmo Security app
The software installation of the smoke detector is done via the Netatmo Security appwhich can be downloaded for free from the App Store (and Play Store).
Like most smart devices, the smoke detector only uses 2.4 GHz WiFi. This has the advantage that the range of the WiFi signal is greater than that of 5 GHz.
The installation wizard guides you through the steps to install the smoke detector. The smoke detector will then be visible in the Netatmo security app and in the Home app of iOS.

You have to test the siren manually from the app, the app will send a notification for this. Press the smoke detector until you hear two beeps, the moment you let go the siren will go off. This stops again when you press the smoke detector again.
It is not possible to connect the Netatmo smoke detectors together, which is possible with the Nest Protect smoke detectors, for example. This has the advantage that, for example, if there is a fire in the shed, all smoke detectors in the home will go off. Unfortunately, Netatmo did not add this feature.

HomeKit support
Netatmo’s smoke detector has support for HomeKit and Google Assistant, so you can make the detector even smarter. Via the Home app you can consult the detector, view the status and receive an additional notification when the alarm goes off.
