Apple has taken an important new step in the field of artificial intelligence, according to the company Apple Intelligence announced. A personal intelligence system for Mac, iPhone and iPad that combines the power of generative models with the user’s individual context, resulting in AI that is both useful and relevant.
While we shouldn’t expect Apple’s AI solution anytime soon, there are still a lot of questions surrounding Apple’s steps into generative artificial intelligence. We answer these in detail in the Apple Intelligence FAQ below, so that you are well prepared for the arrival of AI.
Availability Apple Intelligence
The most important question in this AI FAQ is of course when can I use Apple Intelligence? Apple has announced that Apple Intelligence will be released in the fall of 2024. This will be a public beta version and is part of the English (US) version of iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. Some features, software platforms and additional languages will follow over the course of next year. Developers can try an early test version later this summer.

Which devices support Apple Intelligence?
You can use Apple Intelligence on one of the Apple devices below and requires iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia or newer.
- iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPad Pro with M1 chip or newer
- iPad Air with M1 chip or newer
- MacBook Pro with M1 chip or newer
- MacBook Air with M1 chip or newer
- Mac mini with M1 chip or newer
- iMac with M1 chip or newer
- Mac Pro with M2 chip or newer
- MacStudio
What is Apple Intelligence?
Apple Intelligence is a personal intelligence system for Mac, iPhone and iPad that combines the power of generative models with the user’s individual context. It leverages Apple Silicon’s ability to understand and generate language and images, take action in the required apps, and assume the user’s individual context.
This makes things you do every day a lot faster and easier. With Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new standard for privacy within AI. The company does this by flexibly dividing computing capacity between operations on the device itself and larger models that run on special Apple servers.

What is Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) refers to systems capable of generating new, original content based on patterns learned from existing data. These systems use algorithms, such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), to produce images, texts, or music that resemble human creations, for example.
They learn patterns and structures in data sets and then create new content that follows these patterns. These technologies have the potential to stimulate creativity and promote innovation by generating new ideas and concepts.
Apple Intelligence is integrated into their operating system and works directly on the device. When a task requires more computing power, a secure connection is made to iCloud servers.
What about my privacy?
To be truly useful, Apple Intelligence uses specific, individual data while protecting your privacy. An important aspect of Apple Intelligence is that data is processed on the device itself. Most models that use the system run entirely on the Mac, iPhone and iPad themselves.

However, more complex tasks may need to be performed that require more computing power. In that case, Apple uses Private Cloud Compute. This cloud facility integrates the same privacy and security measures as Apple devices.
With Private Cloud Compute, Apple Intelligence can flexibly distribute computing capacity and deploy larger models on servers for complex tasks. These models run on servers powered by Apple Silicon and provide a foundation that allows Apple to ensure data is never retained or exposed. Apple also cannot view the data.

The program code running on the Apple servers can be checked for privacy by independent experts. And with cryptography, Private Cloud Compute ensures that iPhone, iPad and Mac do not communicate with a server if the software on that server has not been made public. All this makes it possible to use the AI features with confidence.
What capabilities does Apple Intelligence have?
Apple’s biggest AI feature may be its combination of generative models and privacy. You can use all AI tools, with your personal data, without having to send it to servers where it can be stored. Separately, Apple Intelligence will unlock new ways on your iPhone, iPad and Mac. You can put them into four categories: Language, Images, Actions and personal context. Below is some example:
- The writing aid ‘Writing Tools‘ helps you rewrite, check, and summarize text wherever you type.
- With the Rewrite feature you can choose from different variations of what you have written yourself, for example to adjust the tone or to ensure that the text fits well with the target group.
- A Proofread feature checks your text for language errors, word choice and sentence structure.
- Of Summarize you can select text and have it automatically summarized into one clear paragraph, just the main points, a table or a list.
- Thanks to Priority Notifications the most important notifications appear at the top of the stack.
- A new focus’Reduce Interruptions lets you concentrate better on what you are doing, as it only shows notifications that you may need to respond to immediately.
- With the Image Playground feature you can create fun images in no time, choosing from the Animation, Illustration or Sketch styles.
- With the help of AI you can create your own Genmoji to make. Give a description and the model will turn it into an emoji.
- A Clean Up tool in Photos Finds and removes disturbing objects in the photo, without accidentally changing the subject of the photo.
- Search in natural language in photos, among other things, by describing a moment
- and much more

Does Siri really get much smarter with AI?
Thanks to the capabilities of Apple Intelligence, Siri is more deeply integrated into the system. Siri has a richer understanding of language and responds more naturally, contextually relevant and personalized, so you can get everyday tasks done easier and faster. Siri can also understand you if you falter or misspoke. In addition, the assistant can remember the context of one question for the next.
You can type questions to Siri and switch between typing and speaking at any time. Siri knows and understands what is on the screen and can therefore take action based on what you are doing. The assistant can also search across multiple apps and combine their information to help you.
Will you soon be able to use ChatGPT directly?
Apple is integrating the use of ChatGPT (GPT-4o) into iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. This allows you to leverage ChatGPT’s knowledge and understanding of images and documents without having to switch apps.
Siri can also use ChatGPT’s knowledge where necessary. Siri first asks your permission before sending a question, possibly including documents and photos, to ChatGPT, and then immediately provides the answer.

In addition, ChatGPT is integrated into various system-wide tools, such as when composing texts or generating images. You can also ask ChatGPT for additional information about what is shown on your screen.
What about privacy and ChatGPT?
When you use ChatGPT, your privacy is protected. This way, your IP address remains hidden and OpenAI does not store your questions and requests. Do you choose to link your own account? Then the ChatGPT policy for data use applies.
Is it free to use ChatGPT?
You have free access without having to create an account. Existing ChatGPT subscribers can link their account and use paid features directly from the apps.
