iOS 18: Check the charging speed of a wireless charger

Starting in iOS 18, you can check the charging status of a wireless charger via the settings. Many wireless chargers claim to be MagSafe, while they are limited to 5W, the standard QI speed. This new feature can help you understand why your iPhone may not charge as quickly as you expect.

If you want to purchase a wireless charger for your iPhone, you will quickly discover that the selection is enormous. You also have the choice of a standard charger, MagSafe compatible and certified MagSafe chargers.

MagSafe charging speed

MagSafe compatible means that the wireless charger has a magnet to keep the charger in place. In the vast majority of cases, however, it charges with only 5W. Only the MagSafe chargers certified by Apple can charge your iPhone at 15W, which are often the more expensive wireless chargers from well-known brands such as Belkin and Nomad. Qi2 also charges wirelessly at a speed of 15 W, we have explained exactly how this works here in detail.

How to Check Wireless Charger Speed in iOS 18

In iOS 18, Apple added additional functionality to the Battery section of the Settings app. You can now check if you are dealing with a slow charger.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone
  • Navigate to ‘Battery’
  • Tap the ‘Last 24 Hours’ tab
  • Check the status with the graphs

If you are dealing with a slow 5W wireless charger, ‘Slow Charger’ will appear above the battery level graph during the day charging. There is an information button available with the slow charging message, but it refers to the general Apple support page. If no message appears above the graph, the iPhone is being charged via fast charging.

Are you not looking immediately while charging? Then the graph itself shows slow charging at the bottom with an orange bar below the battery level, so you can check the charging process afterwards.
