There are a number of iPhone users who complain about the fact that their phone is not fully charged in the morning. Even though the iPhone has been charged for a full night, the smartphone is still only charged between 80 and 90%.
In most cases, there is nothing wrong with the battery of the device, but it is due to a special function. iOS applies the software optimized charging. This is an option to intelligently extend the life of the iPhone battery, however, this does mean that the iPhone stops charging at 80% and only continues when the night is almost over.
How to: Optimized iPhone charging
Optimized Charging is enabled by default when installing iOS 13 or later. The iPhone calculates how long it takes to fully charge the battery. Once this time period is determined, iOS will stop charging when the battery reaches 80% charge.

Because iOS has calculated how long it takes to fully charge, your iPhone knows exactly when it needs to charge again to reach 100%. We have explained exactly how the function works in the iPhone optimized charging tip.
iPhone is not fully charged
Optimized Charging may be good for your iPhone battery, but sometimes things can go wrong. This is usually because you got up earlier than usual or because iOS made a mistake in calculating the schedule. This results in an iPhone that is not fully charged. There are two ways to fix this: disable Optimized Charging or restore it.
Disable optimized charging
- Open Settings
- Navigate to ‘Battery’
- (Select ‘Battery conditions and charging’)
- Tap on ‘Charging optimization’
- Disable the ‘Optimized Charging’ option

From now on, your iPhone’s battery will be charged to 100% immediately, but please note that this is not good for the battery and can result in a less well-functioning battery over time. We have explained exactly how this works in the highlighted article below.
Restore battery optimized charging
If you still want to use the function, you can also restore it. You do this by turning off the option according to the steps above and not using it for a while. After a few days, turn the option back on and iOS will perform the calculations again to optimize the charging.
iPhone battery not fully charging
If you have tried the above solutions and are still unable to fully charge your battery, then there is more to it. The battery may be old and need to be replaced. You can read more about this in the manual: iPhone battery replacement.
