Health is becoming increasingly important and thanks to current technology, advanced medical devices are becoming more accessible for home use. Measuring your blood pressure is very important and with the Withings BPM Core you immediately get a professional blood pressure monitor at home.
Withings is a household name and has been manufacturing smart and accurate home health devices for several years. With the BPM Core, you can perform three professional measurements with just one device. In addition to checking your blood pressure, you can also perform an ECG (electrocardiogram) and analyze your heart sounds.
The Withings BPM Core
The Withings BMP Core is a 3-1 device and is primarily a blood pressure monitor, but can also make ECGs and listen to your heart sounds. This gives you a complete product that can analyze the health of your heart.
The BPM Core is a typical Withings product and is made of high-quality materials. The blood pressure monitor can be used by multiple users and is linked to the Health Mate app. The device connects to the network via Wi-Fi so that measured results are immediately synchronized with the app.

In Europe, you can only sell medical devices if they are approved and meet the requirements for health devices. You should remember that medical devices for home use are only an aid and cannot replace a doctor. Therefore, always consult a doctor if you suspect health problems.
Pairing to the Health Mate app
Before you can use the BPM Core, you need to pair it with the Withings Health Mate app, which is similar to Apple’s Health app. The app allows you to manage paired devices, sync and view results.
During installation, you will go through several steps and connect the BPM to your Wi-Fi network. During installation, you will learn more about the blood pressure monitor and how it works. For example, it is explained how to perform measurements reliably and what the different options are.

Does your partner have their own Withings account? They can also install the BPM Core in the same way and link it to the app. This way, everyone has their own account with data, synchronization and every family member can use the BPM Core.

Professional blood pressure monitor
First of all, the Withings BMP Core is intended to measure your blood pressure and can safely be described as a professional device. You can attach the BPM around your upper arm using a traditional blood pressure band. The user can do this themselves, but it does require some practice because the flap must be properly attached with Velcro. If someone at home can help you with this, it is recommended that you do so so that the measurements remain reliable.

By pressing the button on the top, the measurement is started and the band will fill with air. The automatic and integrated pump does its job well and just like any blood pressure band, it will slightly clamp your arm. The measurement takes about 30 seconds and that is faster than manual measurements.
Because the band fills with air and pinches the arm, the device can register the pulsation of the veins so that the diastolic and systolic pressure can be calculated. Once the results are known, you can continue with making an ECG. By pressing the button you can skip this and immediately view the blood pressure values.

Once the measurement is known, the results, including your heart rate, will appear on the screen. A colored LED indicates whether the values are good, less good or bad. Via the white stripe you can choose a user and the data is synchronized with the app.
Making heart films with the ECG function
After checking your blood pressure, an electrocardiogram can be started. The BMP Core has a metal base that you can grip with your other hand. Before you get started, it is good to know how the measurement is made.
Every time your heart beats it sends out an electrical impulse. The BPM Core has a built-in heart rate monitor and by placing your fingers on the bottom a closed circuit is created. This allows the Core to register the electrical impulses that your heart produces.

An ECG provides a great deal of information about the functioning of the heart muscle, particularly the heart rate (number of beats per minute) and the regularity of the rhythm. In addition, doctors can analyse the results and detect certain abnormalities such as structural changes, heart attacks, cardiac arrhythmias or a lack of oxygen in the heart. You can read more about the electrocardiogram here.
The BPM Core can warn you when you suffer from atrial fibrillation. This means that the heart beats irregularly and this can be a sign that you are dealing with a heart rhythm disorder. If you get this result frequently, it is best to contact your GP.

During the recording of an ECG you will see an animation and after the recording the result will be shown immediately. In order to get a complete analysis, the heart rate during the recording must be between 50 and 100 beats per minute.
Integrated stethoscope for heart sounds
When you look closely at the BPM Core, you will see a white round disk on the side, this is a digital stethoscope. This must be pressed against the side of your chest, at the height of your heart, during the measurement. The BPM Core makes an audio recording of the heart sounds via the integrated and extremely sensitive microphone.
The precise sound sensor can detect specific heart sound frequencies that correspond to the opening and closing of the heart valves. The sounds are analyzed using (patented) artificial intelligence to detect potential abnormalities. The software was developed in collaboration with cardiologists and trained using thousands of real heart sound recordings.

The digital stethoscope can only be used when the room is quiet, as noise can affect the measurement. The results are not immediately displayed in the application. Withings analyses the sounds on their servers and listens to them extensively (anonymously).
Important!
The Withings BPM Core cannot detect a heart attack, blood clots, stroke, and cannot detect specific heart conditions. The Core can only measure irregularities that can ultimately be a symptom of heart problems. Always consult your doctor if you suspect something is wrong.

View results in the Health Mate app
When you use the BPM Core, you can read the results on the screen of the device itself afterwards. If you want more details, you can consult the Health Mate app. All measurements are stored in the app so that you can consult everything afterwards or share it with your doctor.
For blood pressure, your systolic and diastolic pressure is stored and your heart rate. Colors indicate whether the results are good or bad and what the normal values are.

In the app you can also find all the ECGs, including a video of the measurements in the form of a graph. The results are also explained so that you have a good idea of the measurement.
Finally, you can also listen to your heart sounds via the app. After the audio recording has been analyzed, you can consult the results. With each result, the app gives you advice so that you know when it is best to consult a doctor.
BPM Core in practice
The Withings Core blood pressure monitor is easy to use and you can attach it yourself around your arm. In practice, this can be difficult and it is therefore advisable to have a housemate do it so that it fits properly and tightly around your arm. The Core does everything else itself after you have pressed the button. If you have trouble with the measurements, it is best to restart the training. You can do this via the Health Mate app â–¸ Devices â–¸ BPM Core â–¸ Manual. Now press the button on the BPM until ‘TRAINING’ appears.
When measuring your blood pressure, it is always advisable to sit on a chair at the table and relax for five minutes before you start. It is also advisable to wait two minutes after the first measurement and then perform another measurement. This is the only way to get reliable results because stress and haste can give a distorted picture.

In the beginning, it takes some getting used to the operation of the blood pressure monitor. It only has one button and that can be confusing for some users. After some practice, the BPM Core is easy to use and you can easily start a measurement.
Once the BPM Core is ready, you can immediately view the results on the display and link them to a user. Quickly measuring your blood pressure may not be possible, but that should not be an argument. Measuring your blood pressure simply takes time.
The BPM Core contains a rechargeable battery that you can charge via micro USB. The battery lasts a reasonable amount of time, about 4 weeks when you perform a measurement every day.
