If you use iCloud Photos, your iPhone, iPad, or Mac will automatically sync new photos and videos to iCloud. Sometimes the syncing process will pause to save battery life.
If desired, you can resume syncing photos and videos by pausing the sync. Of course, you can also pause uploads to iCloud, which is especially useful if you find that your iCloud Photo Library has a lot of photos and videos to upload.

iCloud Photos syncing makes photos and videos automatically available across all your Apple devices, without the need to manually transfer files. This offers both convenience and backup, so your media is stored in the cloud and won’t be lost if you lose a device.
In addition, Photos is more energy-efficient with the battery of your iPhone, iPad and MacBook. For example, the upload of photos and videos is regularly paused when updating your iCloud Photo Library. This is to ensure that the battery of your devices is not drastically drained by the synchronization process.
Apple’s Photos app prefers to update the photo library when your iPhone, iPad or Mac is plugged in. Fortunately, you can control when uploading resumes or pause the update yourself.
Resume iCloud Photos Syncing
- Open the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad (iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 and later)
- Tap your profile picture or initials at the top right
- Information about your library will appear below your name
- Tap resume or pause to force upload
If you have iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or earlier installed, open the Photos app and navigate to the ‘Photos’ tab. Then scroll all the way down.
Below the number of photos and videos you will find a bar that shows the process. Below this bar you can see some statistics and you will find the ‘Resume’ button. Tap on ‘Resume’ to start syncing. With the option ‘Pause’ it is possible to pause the upload or download.
How to Pause iCloud Photo Library on a Mac
On a Mac running macOS High Sierra or later, you can also pause and resume iCloud Photo Library syncing. Open the Photos app, go to the Photos tab, then scroll all the way to the bottom. You can then resume or pause syncing under your Photo Library statistics.
