Since the iPhone 13 (Pro) you can use photographic styles and on the iPhone 16 (Pro) Apple has adapted this way of photographing. On these models you can use the second generation of photographic styles.
You can use a Photographic Style on iPhone 16 (Pro) to control how photos are captured by the iPhone camera. Photographic styles adjust specific colors in certain parts of your photos so that your photos look exactly the way you want them to. Your photographic style is saved and applied to all the photos you take. After you choose a photographic style, you can adjust it in Camera or edit it in the Photos app.
Set default photographic style
As a user you can set a default photographic style. This ensures that you always use this style when taking photos with your iPhone. You can adjust the style in the camera or afterwards if necessary.
- Open Settings
- Navigate to ‘Camera’
- Tap ‘Photographic Styles’
- Select ‘Get started’
- Choose four photos you took with your iPhone
- Swipe to view the styles
You have the option to see the different styles on your captured photos. This way you immediately know what iOS will adjust while taking the photo. The slide switch allows you to adjust the intensity of the style. Once you’ve found a style, tap Continue to edit the effect in detail. Save the settings when you are satisfied.
No filters, but professional adjustments
A photographic style is not a filter, but enhances specific parts of a photo such as shadows, contrast, skin tones, etc. Filters edit the entire photo, while a photographic style edits a specific part (depending on your style).
Since the introduction of next generation photographic styles, the filter options have disappeared on the iPhone 16 (Pro) and been replaced by advanced styles.
Use photographic styles in Camera
Once you choose a default style, iPhone can use it when taking photos in the default Camera app.
- Open the Camera app
- If necessary, tap the square with the white dot at the top right
- If the symbol is yellow, the photographic style is active
The style is applied to the image in the camera app in real time. Drag your finger over the slider status to change the hue and color at the same time. Drag your finger over the slider below the bar control status to change the intensity.
Swipe left or right over the camera app image to switch between the different Photographic styles.
Adjust photographic style afterwards
On an iPhone 16 (Pro) you can now also adjust the style of a photo afterwards. Open the image and tap the edit button (three horizontal lines). Choose ‘Styles’ and adjust the desired effect.
Choose between the different styles, then tap the control status again to adjust the effect in detail. Choose ‘Standard’ to use no effect.
Unfortunately, you can only edit Photographic Styles afterwards on photos taken with an iPhone 16 (Pro). You cannot edit older photos this way.
Disable photographic style
Open Settings on your iPhone and go to ‘Camera’. Tap ‘Photographic Styles’ and choose ‘Restore Defaults’ to disable the style and restore it to its default settings.
