With Image Playground you can make fun, unique images with the help of Apple Intelligence. You can choose from various concepts, such as themes, costumes, accessories and places. It is also possible to type a description or to select a photo of someone in your photo library and make an image based on that.
Image Playground generates images in a certain style including animation for a modern 3D variant and illustration for pictures with simple shapes. Realistic images cannot be generated so that it is a recognizable AI image.
Enable Apple Intelligence

Image Playground Application
After you have activated Apple Intelligence on your iPhone, iPad or Mac you get access to the image playground application and all the accompanying extras. This way you can also access the tool directly from the Message app, notes, Freeform, Keynote or existing photos to generate an AI image.
Making AI images with Playground
The operation of the application is very simple and is easy to use. This way you can easily describe an image and the app does the rest.
- Open the Playground app
- If necessary, tap the plus button
- Select the text field
- Describe the image that must be made
- Playground will start
The clearer you describe an image, the better the result. Moreover, while describing an image you can also use names of contacts or pets to base the image on this person or animal. Experiment especially with the app and make a unique combination for fun images.
Adjust results to perfection
After an image has been made you can adjust the result with extra word descriptions, or use one of Apple’s suggestions. You get different possible images for every description, and you can sweep through to choose which one you want to use. It is also possible to add and remove words and sentences until you have refined the generated image until you have achieved the desired result.
Save and share AI image
After you have made your ideal image, you can tap the ‘ready’ button to store it in your image playground library. Items stored in the Image Playground library can be re-edited, removed or shared with the standard part menu later. There are also built -in tools for copying, sharing or storing an image during the creation process.
Personalized images based on people
With Image Playground it is possible to personalize AI images based on people or pets. These people must be present in your photo library in the album ‘Persons’ or you must manually upload an image of a person. It is not possible to generate an image of a person with the help of AI and text, for example from a celebrity.

With the help of the photo button you can take a photo of a person or animal, or upload it manually. In addition, you can also use the person button to choose a person immediately.
Images of people and pets come in different versions. This is because Playground uses the specific angle, lighting and appearance of a certain image and then comes up with new suggestions in 3D or 2D. For that reason you can view multiple results and select the desired image.
Use suggestions
If you don’t know where to start making an image or if you need inspiration for details, Apple has a series of suggestions on which you can tap to add to your image.
There are themes such as adventure, disco, summer, party, sunset and fantasy, together with places such as city, space, desert, park, prairie and forest. Apple proposes costumes, including artist, chef, walker, magician, robot and superhero, and there are accessories from which you can choose, such as sunglasses, hat, hats, party hat and a festive flower crown.
Adjust an animation style
At the time of writing, Image Playground has two styles active in the app and you can choose between ‘animation’ and ‘illustration’. The main difference is 3D and 2D, with the 3D variant resembling a Pixar image and the 2D version on a simpler cartoon. Changing between styles is as follows:
- Open the Playground app
- Tap the style button to change the style (afterwards)
Image Playground in Messages
The Image Playground-Feature is in messages, so that you can immediately make and insert an image. Suggestions in the Playground app are not contextual, but when you use the function in messages, you may see suggestions based on the conversation.
- Tap in a conversation on the plus button
- Then choose Image Playground in the list
- A mini app is opened
This version of Playground works the same as the full app. Just type in a description of an image and use the same steps to get it where you want it. When you’re done, tap ready and it appears the image in the shipping field of your conversation and you can send it. Playground will automatically give suggestions based on the conversation.
Image brush in notes
Image Wand, image brush in Dutch can be found in a later update in the notes app. With the new options you can make notes more dynamic and provide images. With image brush in the tool palette you can quickly make an image based on the text or visual content in your note.
Image brush turns a rough sketch into a fully finished image, and all you have to do is pull a circle around your sketch. You can even select empty space in your note to make an image based on the context around it.
Image Pensel analyzes the handwritten or typed text using generative models on your device and then generates an image that fits the text. In Image Brush you can choose from the styles of animation, illustration and drawing.
