Sort or filter data in the Numbers app

The Numbers app is Apple’s alternative to Microsoft Excel and you get free when purchasing a Mac, iPhone or iPad. Although the Numbers app is less popular than Excel, this is a very powerful spreadsheet program with similar functionality.

If you work with spreadsheets that contain a lot of data, it can be a difficult job and you run the risk of errors because you quickly lose the overview.

The Numbers app contains some useful tools for editing a spreadsheet with a lot of data, this is the sorting and filter function. With these functions you can sort the data based on a selected column or limit the data to a certain value or condition.

Sort data in Numbers

Sorting a spreadsheet by name, article number, place of residence etc. is no problem for the Numbers app. Follow the steps below:

  1. Select the sheet you want to sort, click on the button Organize In the upper right corner and choose the tab Sort.
  2. If you only want to sort certain data, select those rows and then choose Sort selected rows In the upper drop -down list in the sidebar. Otherwise, choose Sort a whole table.
  3. Select in the section Add column The column you want to sort, after which you can order Upright or Descendant Select.
  4. If you want to sort on a multiple columns, you can add them via the Add column knob.
  5. The effect of this is immediately visible when you have selected a column. If you are satisfied with this, click the button Sort now At the top of the sidebar.

Filtering data in Numbers

If you only want to view certain data in a spreadsheet, you can do the filter function. This makes it possible to filter on an existing value or on the basis of a condition.

  3. After this, new pop-up window appears in which you can give up the condition for the filter.
