Calling a homepod enables you to make telephone calls through the homepod speaker through speech commands. It offers hands -free communication and uses Siri to manage and answer calls.
In addition, it is also possible to have Facetime Audio calls through Apple’s smart speaker. In that case it is not necessary that an iPhone is near the HomePod. This is the case for telephone calls or calls to emergency services.
Personal requests
Personal requests for HomePod enables users to activate their personal assistant through speech assignments and perform various tasks. This includes playing music from the personal music library, asking questions, arranging smart home devices and receiving requesting, among other things, agenda and memories, but also recent messages. With personal requests you can also achieve telephone conversations on a homepod. You can read back in the highlighted article below.
Call a homepod
The HomePod uses your iOS or iPados device for incoming and outgoing telephone conversations and facetime conversations. An iPhone is required for telephone conversations or calls to emergency services. You use Siri to start a telephone conversation or Facetime Audio Call:
- Hey, siri, belt [naam contactpersoon]
- Hey, Siri, Facetime [naam contactpersoon]
- Hey, siri, belt [telefoonnummer]
- Hey, Siri, call the last song again

When a call comes in on your iOS or iPados device, you say Hey, Siri, pick up the phone. Before you start the conversation, you can ask Hey Siri, Who’s Calling? (does not work in Dutch yet).
You can end a conversation by tapping the top of the HomePod twice or hang it via your iOS or iPados device. Since iOS 17 and iPados 17 you can also say Hey, siri, hang on. Do you tap the HomePod once while calling? Then you can switch the microphone on or off.
Manage multiple conversations
Tap the top of the HomePod to place the current call and answer the new call. Tap double on the top of the HomePod to switch between the conversations.
Adjust volume
The light on top of the HomePod turns green when the HomePod is used as a telephone speaker. You can adjust the volume of the conversation with the controllers on the top of the HomePod.
Transfer telephone conversation
Are you already calling via your iPhone? Then you can also transfer the telephone conversation to the HomePod. To do this, tap ‘Audio’ on your iOS or iPados device and choose HomePod. In addition, you can also keep your iPhone at the HomePod to transfer the conversation via Handoff.

Calling emergency services via HomePod
If you call the emergency services via the HomePod you use the command: Hey, Siri, call the emergency number or Hey, Siri, call the emergency services. Then the HomePod tries to call the iPhone that you have configured to make personal requests on the HomePod.
If that iPhone is not available, or if your device for personal requests is an iPad, the HomePod tries to call via another iPhone on the same network as the HomePod.
