If you are going on holiday in Europe soon, you no longer have to physically take your European health insurance card (EHIC) with you. At least, if you are insured with CZ: the health insurer has digitally added the health insurance card to the CZ app.
This means that you always have the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) on your hand on your iPhone, without having to bring a physical card. The EHIC of family members who are insured on your policy can also be found in the app.
What is the EHIC ZorgPas?
The EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) is a free, personal card with which you are entitled to medically necessary care during a temporary stay in another European country. The map is valid in all EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

With the EHIC you get care according to the conditions and costs that apply to residents of the country where you are staying. The card only covers unexpected, necessary medical care and no planned treatments or repatriation. In the Netherlands, the EHIC is usually on the back of your health insurance pass.
If you are insured with CZ, you have a digital version of the ZorgPas via the CZ app: that of yourself, but also of your co-insured persons.

View your EHIC pass in the CZ app
Follow the steps below to view your European ZorgPas (EHIC) in the CZ app:

- Open the CZ app on your iPhone.
- Log in with your DigiD app or EU login.
- Tap ‘Service’ at the bottom right of the app home screen.
- Search for the menu option ‘ZorgPas’ and tap this.
- Select ‘Abroad’ to view your EHIC.
Your digital EHIC with all the necessary data now appears on the screen. By tapping the magnifying glass, the newly filling is displayed.
It is also possible to view the EHIC of a family member if your family members are on your policy. For this you tap your name at the top of the screen and select the family member.
When do you use the EHIC?
You must show your EHIC when you need medical care during a temporary stay abroad. The foreign healthcare provider, such as a doctor or hospital, asks for an insurance certificate to check whether you are insured. In many countries, the EHIC applies as this proof.
By showing the EHIC, you prevent you from having to advance medical costs and the healthcare provider can immediately declare the costs to your Dutch health insurer. The EHIC is only intended for unexpected, medically necessary care and not for planned treatments or private clinics.
