You can use guides in the map app of Apple. With this function you will receive recommendations for the best places in a city, especially selected for you by a number of renowned companies.
This way you discover the best locations to have dinner, shopping or just walking around. You can save guides so that you can easily find them later. The range of guides is getting bigger, so you can perfectly prepare a trip. The guides are available not only for American cities, but also for European cities and locations around the world.
Guides for Apple cards
The Guides option, present since iOS 14, iPados 14 and MacOS Big Sur in the map app, offers two types of guides: collections that you put together with your favorite places, and guides with recommendations. The latter go one step further and give suggestions for locations to visit in a city. You can see it as the digital variant of the Lonely Planet, Michelin and ANWB Extra, but then immediately integrated into Apple Maps.
View and use guides in cards
- Open the Apple card app
- Search for a city, for example: Tokyo, Antwerp or Paris
- Select the city in the list and open the map
- Scroll down and choose an available guide
When several guides are available, they are shown. Unfortunately, there is no general overview of cities with a guide. But in Europe you can find guides from Louis Vuitton City Guides, Rick Steves’ Top Experiences, Fatmap, Komoot and Street Art Cities Guide.
A few cities that are definitely worth seeing are Paris, Venice, Rome, Reims, Arles, Prague, Lisbon, Istanbul, Berlin, Antwerp and Amsterdam. The range changes regularly.
Extra tip: When you open a guide from a specific provider, you will see the name of the provider at the bottom of the page. If you tap this, all available guides from this provider are opened so that you can view and add them.
Save and update guides
Once you have opened a guide, you can view it and add the different parts via the Plus-Knnop on an iPhone or iPad to your favorite places. With the Plus button at ‘Guides’ or the storage button you can save favorite guides.
On a Mac you can do this using the ‘Put in Guides’ button. All stored copies can be found through my guides that also contain your personal collections.
You can consult the stored guides by wiping the search field. At the bottom of the list you will find the guides, and they can also be found behind your profile in the card app.
Saved guides are also automatically synchronized with your Apple devices and updated as soon as new places are added. This way you always receive the most recent recommendations, useful as a restaurant, attraction or something similar.
