Dolby Laboratories Dolby Vision 2 announced during the IFA in Berlin. With this launch, Dolby promises a big step forward in image quality, where clarity, color reproduction and motion control are lifted to a higher level.

Central is the use of artificial intelligence, under the name “Content Intelligence”, which automatically adjusts the display to the content, device and the environment.

AI as a engine of image optimization
Dolby Vision 2 is equipped with a new and more powerful sculpture engine that works optimally with various types of content, from films and series to live sports and games. The biggest renewal is in the application of content intelligence. This technology uses AI to constantly refine the image settings, so that the viewing experience remains optimal in all circumstances.

New techniques for dark, light and movement
The second generation Dolby Vision introduces various functions that must visibly improve image quality. For example, Precision Black provides more detail and depth in dark scenes, without this being at the expense of the creative intention of makers. Light Sense adjusts the image to the lighting conditions in the room, by combining ambient light sensors with reference points from the content itself. For sports and gaming, specific optimisations have been added, including adapted white points and refined motion view, so that fast action appears more natural.

A striking addition is Authentic Motion, a new tool with which filmmakers can decide for themselves how motion blur and the soap-opera effect are managed. This function must ensure that the creative vision is retained, while the viewer benefits from smooth images.

Two variants: Standard and Max
Dolby brings the technology to the market in two versions. Dolby Vision 2 is the basic variant, which brings the most important innovations to a wide audience. For high-end televisions there is Dolby Vision 2 Max, a more extensive version that makes even higher performance possible thanks to extra functions and refinements.

First partnerships announced
Hevenense is the first brand that will integrate Dolby Vision 2 into its televisions. The collaboration is made possible via the MediaTek Pentonic 800 chip with the Mirvision Pro-Engine, which has been specially developed to support the new functions of Dolby Vision 2. According to Hisense, the technology combines excellently with the RGB-Miniled screens of the company, which are known for their large color range and high brightness.

Mediagroep Canal+ also supports the technology. The company announced that it will offer films, series and live sporting events in Dolby Vision 2 to its subscribers. This means that the technology is not only available on new televisions, but also immediately applied in content distribution.
