Some options in macOS are so handy that they should actually be enabled as standard. In Finder for Mac you will find a good example of this. If you browse through the folders of your Mac in Finder, you will notice that the size of a folder is not displayed; Only ‘-‘ appears behind the name of the folder.
The moment you want to know how big a folder is, you will be the Infovenster via the context menu or with the key combination command⌘ + I have to open. However, you can ensure that the size of folders is always displayed in the Finder overview.
Show size of folders in Finder
In Finder for Mac you can indicate whether the size of folders should be displayed as standard in the list view. A simple trick that you can activate with a pair of mouse clicks.
- Open the Finder window
- Click in the menu bar on ‘display’ and choose ‘List’
- Now go back to the menu bar and click on ‘display’
- Click on ‘Show display options’ or use the range combination command⌘ + J
- Check the option ‘Calculate all sizes’ at the bottom of the window

From that moment on, the size of the folders is displayed neatly in Finder. Please note: this function is only switched on for the current folder. If you want to implement this for all folders on your Mac, it is possible by clicking on the ‘Use as standard’ button in the display options.
Keep in mind that calculating can take some time, depending on the number of files in the folders. That is why Apple has chosen not to switch on the calculation as standard. With the above steps you can apply this to all folders or only to the most important, such as the home folder.
