Making massage oil yourself is not difficult. Depending on which ingredients you use, it has a relaxing, invigorating or nourishing effect. We’ll show you three different recipes.
You don’t have to buy massage oil; you can make it yourself from natural ingredients. This way you save money and at the same time have the opportunity to choose all the ingredients precisely. Depending on the ingredients you use to make your own massage oil, the effect will vary. Here you can find out how it works and what you need.
What you should pay attention to when choosing massage oil
To make massage oil yourself, you need a so-called base oil. We recommend that you only buy certified organic and fairly traded oil. By choosing organic products, you can support sustainable production that avoids the use of chemical-synthetic pesticides. The Fairtrade seal stands for appropriate working conditions and wages in the countries of origin.
It’s up to you how much massage oil you want to make. If it’s just smaller quantities, you can vary it more frequently. Before using the massage oil, test it on an inconspicuous area of skin. This way you can make sure that you tolerate the ingredients used and that they are suitable for your skin.
If you are pregnant, you should check with your doctor beforehand whether your homemade massage oil is suitable for you.
Make your own massage oil: Which oils are suitable for this?

The base oil forms the basis for your massage oil. We recommend that you choose an oil that is as natural as possible. Suitable oils include coconut oil, olive oil, sesame oil, jojoba oil or almond oil. Since the base oil is then combined with essential oils, you should take into account that some of the oils naturally have an intense smell.
You can use the base oil pure. However, the essential oils enhance the effect of the massage oil and, for example, allow you to relax better. Make sure they are high quality. They should be natural and come from a certified organic source. Good organic oils are available from Primavera or Farfalla, for example.
You should never apply the essential oil undiluted to your skin. For every 100 milliliters of base oil, you should add around 10 to 20 drops of essential oil.
Recipe for a relaxing massage oil

For a relaxing massage oil you need:
- 100 ml almond oil
- 5 drops of lemon balm oil
- 5 drops of lavender oil
- a small dark glass bottle
- a funnel
This is how you make the relaxing massage oil:
- Fill the base oil into the glass bottle using a funnel.
- Drip the essential oils into the bottle too.
- Close the bottle tightly and shake it vigorously.
- Store the massage oil in a cool, dark place. It can be kept this way for several months.
Make invigorating massage oil

You can use invigorating massage oil in the morning after showering. The scent of lemon, for example, has a stimulating effect so that you start your day vitally and powerfully. You need these ingredients:
- 100 ml base oil
- 5 drops of lemon oil
- 2 drops of mountain pine oil
- 2 drops rosemary oil
- 2 drops eucalyptus oil
First put the base oil and then the essential oils in a glass bottle. Close it and shake everything vigorously. Stored in a dark and dry place, the invigorating massage oil will last for several months.
This is how you make nourishing massage oil yourself

Marigold has a positive effect on the skin. It moisturizes, protects against inflammation and naturally strengthens sensitive skin. For a nourishing massage oil made from marigolds you need:
- a glass of marigold flowers
- virgin olive oil
This is how you make the nourishing oil:
- Place the marigold flowers in a screw-top jar.
- Cover the flowers completely with olive oil.
- Leave the jar in a warm, sunny place and shake it from time to time.
- Filter the finished oil after three to four weeks.
- Pour it into a dark, sealable bottle.
- Store the calendula oil in a cool, dark place. It lasts like this for several months.
