These videos can save lives: They show you how you should react in an emergency when it is a matter of life and death for yourself or those around you. We present three short and helpful videos to you in more detail.
What do you do if someone suddenly falls over on the other side of the street or you can no longer speak properly from one second to the next? You can find numerous videos on the Internet that explain what to do in just a few minutes and in an entertaining, accessible way. This way you can quickly and easily learn and memorize first aid measures and be prepared for an emergency.
Videos that save lives: what to do if you have a stroke
Lovingly drawn and with a catchy beat: With a rap that catches the ear, the well-known cartoonist Ralph Ruthe, together with the Evangelical Hospital Bethel, shows what to do in the event of a stroke. The main focus is on what you should do if you notice the first signs of a stroke.
The video shows the so-called FAST test. With this you and those around you can quickly and easily determine whether you have a stroke:
-
Face: Contort your face into a smile! If those around you notice that one corner of your mouth is hanging down, you could be having a stroke. Ultimately, this indicates hemiplegia.
-
Arms: Stretch your arms forward or lift them up. If there is paralysis, one arm keeps falling down.
-
Speech: Try saying a simple sentence. If your words sound slurred or you can’t even form a comprehensible word, you have a speech disorder.
-
Time: If one or more signs point to a stroke, you or those around you should call emergency services immediately. When it comes to a stroke, every minute counts. According to the information in the video, you can survive the attack without further consequences if you receive medical help in the first hour.
Every now and then, Ralph Ruthe shares messages on his Instagram channel from people for whom the video actually helped detect a stroke early.
Videos that save lives: chest compressions
Many people complete the first aid course once for their driver’s license and never refresh it again. Basic rules of conduct are increasingly being forgotten. In an emergency, however, correct or incorrect chest compressions can mean the difference between life and death.
The Samaritan Association shows you the basic rules of massage in an entertaining, one-minute video. The video is accompanied by the well-known song “Stayin’ alive”, which gives an indication of the right rhythm.
Attention: As the Samaritan Association itself notes, the video does not correspond to the teaching and does not replace a professional course. You can see the more detailed process of a cardiac massage here:
Explanatory video: This is how first aid works
In an entertaining animated video, the Badische Zeitung explains in detail all the necessary first aid measures. In the video, the measures are divided into three easy-to-remember modules: Check, Call and Press.
-
Check: If a person is lying on the floor, talk to them first and check their breathing. This way you can determine whether the person is still conscious.
-
Call: If the person is not conscious, dial 112 immediately and get medical help.
-
Push: Now start chest compressions as early as possible. To do this, the unconscious person’s upper body should be free. Place your hands on top of each other between the two nipples. Stretch your arms out and begin the massage vigorously. The video from the Samaritan Association described above shows you exactly how this works.
