iOS 26.4 CarPlay: Artificial intelligence comes to the car with support for AI apps

Starting with iOS 26.4, Apple is expanding CarPlay with a new group of apps: voice-controlled AI assistants. CarPlay was previously mainly focused on navigation, communication and music, but thanks to the software update, apps with artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude can also be used in the car.

Apple is normally cautious with new app categories in CarPlay, but now sees that AI assistants fit in well with the experience. These apps can help keep hands and eyes on the road by focusing on voice and smart responses.

While CarPlay previously focused mainly on navigation, communication and music, Apple is increasingly expanding the app categories, provided they are safe to use. With iOS 26.4 it is also possible to use apps with artificial intelligence, such as well-known names such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude.

The CarPlay platform was developed with safety as a priority: it does not contain distracting images, offers limited interaction options and only includes functions that enhance the driving experience. However, Apple recognizes that AI assistants fit well within these guidelines. By focusing on voice and smart responses, these apps can help keep hands and eyes on the road.

Apple officially supports so-called “Voice-Driven AI Apps”. This category allows AI assistant developers to integrate their app into the CarPlay interface, provided they meet Apple’s strict guidelines for security and privacy. In practice, this means that you will soon be able to contact an AI assistant via Siri or an app button on CarPlay, without touching your phone.

This is how AI apps work in CarPlay

The operation is simple: once you connect to CarPlay, your AI app icon will appear next to the other available apps. With one press of the microphone button or via “Hey Siri, start ChatGPT” you can then ask questions, request information or execute commands.

Whether Apple will also allow integration with other apps is currently unknown. Consider planning a route with multiple stops, compiling a shopping list based on your conversation, or even having incoming messages summarized while driving.

Security and privacy remain central

Apple emphasizes that privacy and road safety remain the most important conditions. All requests must be made via voice, text input or complex confirmations are not allowed in CarPlay. AI responses are also presented briefly and auditorily, so drivers are not distracted by visual elements on the screen. Developers must also ensure that data processing complies with Apple’s security standards.

Available from iOS 26.4

The new CarPlay support is part of iOS 26.4, which is currently available in public beta. The official release is expected later this spring.
