When Apple launched the first generation AirTag in 2021, it immediately became a popular tool for tracking keys, bags and other personal items. The compact tracker worked closely with the Find My network, helping millions of Apple devices worldwide find a lost object. Five years later, Apple brings an updated AirTag (2nd generation) to the market with subtle but important improvements.
While the design remains familiar, Apple has focused on improvements in ease of use, privacy and accuracy. For those wondering whether it is worth the upgrade, we list the most important differences below and delve deeper into what the 2nd generation adds.
Brief summary of the differences
- New U2 Ultra Wideband chip for faster and more accurate localization
- Increased Bluetooth range and improved signal strength
- Apple Watch support
- 50% louder than the previous generation
- Eco-friendly design, with more recycled material

U2 chip and accuracy
The biggest improvement is the switch from the U1 to the U2 chip, the same chip used in the iPhone 15 series, Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later. This Ultra Wideband chip provides more accurate direction finding and runs faster, especially in busy urban environments. Based on haptic, visual and audible feedback, Precise Search can help you locate misplaced objects up to 50% further away than the previous generation. The directional arrow on your screen responds more immediately and the location is refreshed within seconds.
Renewed Bluetooth chip
Not only does the U2 chip help accurately detect the AirTag, the updated Bluetooth chip also provides a drastic improvement. The Bluetooth signal strength has noticeably increased, which means that an AirTag can now be detected more quickly even at greater distances. It is also more energy efficient, which is an advantage for battery life.

Apple Watch support
For the first time, you can now find AirTag using Precise Search on Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, right from your wrist. Previously this was limited to searching in the nearby area.
50% louder than the previous generation
The second generation speaker has been completely redesigned. The sound quality is clearer and more audible in open spaces, which is useful for indoor searching. Due to the updated internal design, the new AirTag is 50% louder than its predecessor, so you can hear the AirTag up to 2x further. Improved Precise Search features and a distinctive new sound make it easier to find important items, like keys dropped between couch cushions or a wallet lying around.
Better for the environment
Environmental friendliness has been given a high priority in the design of the new AirTag. The housing is made from 85% recycled plastic, while all magnets are made from 100% recycled rare earth metals. In addition, the gold plating on all circuit boards designed by Apple comes from 100% recycled gold. The paper packaging consists entirely of fibers and can be easily recycled.

Buy AirTag 2nd generation
The AirTag 2nd generation retains the same dimensions as the original version and is compatible with all existing AirTag accessories. The new AirTag has a recommended retail price of €35 for 1 piece and €119 for 4 pieces.
