Apple unveils new Studio Display and brand new Studio Display XDR with 120Hz screen

Apple has announced two new Studio Displays, a major upgrade for Mac users looking for premium external displays. These models are specially designed to work seamlessly with the Mac and are ideal for Mac mini, Mac Studio or Mac Pro users.

Apple has introduced the successors to the 27-inch Studio Display in two variants: one with a standard LCD display and an XDR variant with mini-LED technology. The latter impresses with 120Hz and support for Adaptive Sync. We summarize the details for you.

Apple Studio Display 2nd generation

The Apple Studio Display’s 27-inch 5K Retina LCD screen offers a resolution of 5120 x 2880, with a whopping 14 million pixels and a pixel density of 218 ppi. The brightness is 600 nits, and there is an optional glass variant with nano texture.

The Studio Display is equipped with a 12 MP Center Stage camera, which now also supports Desk Display. In addition, it features three studio-quality microphones and an impressive sound system with six speakers and four force-cancelling woofers. This provides 30% deeper bass compared to the previous generation, complemented by two high-power tweeters for an immersive sound experience.

The Studio Display features Thunderbolt 5 connections, with two ports that let you connect up to four Studio Display models in series or connect accessories at high speed. In addition, two USB-C ports are available for peripherals or to charge devices. Use the included Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable to create a practical connection hub with 96W of charging power; this is enough to quickly charge a 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Studio Display XDR

The new Studio Display XDR includes the latest display technology and powerful features for professionals who expect a lot from their screen. It has an impressive 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display with a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels, providing excellent detail and clarity. The mini LED backlight uses 2304 local dimming zones, which allows extreme contrasts. Nano-textured glass remains optional.

The Studio Display This provides a dynamic range from bright light to deep black, making HDR content very visible.

Studio Display XDR has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which makes movements look and feel very smooth. Adaptive Sync supports a refresh rate that can be continuously varied between 47 and 120 Hz. Because the frame rate is increased and there is less display delay, gaming becomes even smoother.

Thunderbolt 5 connectivity options

Studio Display XDR also features Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, including a second port for connecting high-speed downstream accessories or daisy-chaining other displays. Thanks to two additional USB-C ports for even more connectivity options, it can function as a Thunderbolt hub. This way you keep your workspace clutter-free and, thanks to the included Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable, you have 140 W of charging power, enough to quickly charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Replaces 32-inch Pro Display XDR

The new 27-inch Studio Display XDR takes the place of the previous 32-inch Pro Display XDR as the highest professional display in the product line. This old 32-inch LCD display, which retails for $5,499 and has a screen resolution of 6016 x 3384 (6K), was primarily designed for Mac Pro users, but has now been replaced by the more advanced mini-LED Studio Display XDR.
