On April 1, Apple celebrates a historic milestone: exactly fifty years after its founding in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. From a modest garage company, it grew into the world’s most valuable tech giant, with groundbreaking products that revolutionized our daily lives.
To mark this anniversary, CEO Tim Cook has published a personal open letter on the Apple website, entitled ’50 Years of Thinking Different’. In the letter, he looks back on five decades of innovation – from the Apple I to the iPhone, Apple Watch and services like Apple Music – and thanks users who brought the technology to life.

On April 1, 1976, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne founded Apple Computer Company in Jobs’ parents’ garage in Los Altos, California. A modest start that grew into a tech revolution. Wozniak, an electronics wizard, built the Apple I, a simple personal computer that they sold for $666.66 to hobbyists through clubs such as the Homebrew Computer Club. Wayne soon left the company for fear of risk, while Jobs handled sales and vision; Jobs chose the name ‘Apple’ because he was a fruitarian and it came alphabetically before Atari.
The Apple II in 1977 marked the first major success with ‘color’ and expandability, which made Apple blossom into a multi-billion dollar company when it went public in 1980. The Macintosh (1984) introduced the graphical interface and mouse to the general public, but internal struggles led to Jobs’ departure in 1985. After near bankruptcy in the 1990s, Jobs returned in 1997, with icons such as iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad that made Apple the world’s most valuable company.

Vijftig jaar geleden ontstond in een kleine garage een groots idee. Apple werd opgericht met de simpele gedachte dat technologie persoonlijk moet zijn. Deze overtuiging - voor die tijd baanbrekend - veranderde alles.
Op 1 april bestaat Apple 50 jaar. Vijf decennia aan innovatie, vijf decennia waarin we mensen krachtige tools in handen hebben gegeven. Van de eerste Apple computer tot de Mac, van iPod tot iPhone, iPad tot Apple Watch en AirPods. Plus de services die we elke dag gebruiken, zoals de App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay, iCloud en Apple TV. Elke doorbraak maakte voor ons telkens één ding glashelder: de wereld wordt vooruitÂgebracht door mensen die anders denken.
Want vooruitgang begint altijd bij een persoon: een uitvinder, student, wetenschapper of storyteller. Iemand met een nieuw idee, een slimmere manier, een andere weg. Dit was vanaf het begin de mentaliteit van Apple. Maar daarin hebben we nooit alleen gestaan.
Elke innovatie die we introduceren, is pas het begin van het verhaal. De belangrijkste hoofdstukken worden geschreven door júllie, de mensen die onze technologie gebruiken voor werk, studie, dromen en ontdekkingen. Jullie hebben voor doorbraken gezorgd en zijn bedrijven gestart. Jullie hebben familie opgevrolijkt in het ziekenhuis, de eerste stapjes van peuters vastgelegd. Marathons volbracht, boeken geschreven en oude vriendschappen nieuw leven ingeblazen. Jullie nieuwsgierigheid gevolgd, nieuwe favoriete songs gevonden en mooie verhalen met elkaar gedeeld.
Jullie hebben met de tools die wij maken levens verbeterd, en soms zelfs gered. Dat is wat ons drijft. Want het gaat niet alleen om wat technologie allemaal kan, maar om wat jij ermee kan doen.
Bij Apple bouwen we meer aan de toekomst dan dat we terugkijken op het verleden. Maar deze mijlpaal konden we niet voorbij laten gaan zonder de miljoenen mensen te bedanken die Apple hebben gemaakt tot wat het vandaag is. Onze geweldige teams overal ter wereld, onze ontwikkelaars-community en alle klanten van de afgelopen 50 jaar.
