Apple has introduced a useful new feature for the Apple TV with tvOS 26.4: Continuous Audio Connection. This option solves common audio issues such as interruptions or volume differences when switching between audio formats, ideal for those who have a home theater setup with AV receivers or Sonos speakers.
The update provides a better sound experience without having to change any settings. Users are already noticing clear improvements, especially with 5.1 channel content that previously sounded too quiet compared to Dolby Atmos.
Activate continuous audio connection
You can easily find the option in the Settings app on your Apple TV 4K. Before you can get started, it is important that you update your Apple TV to tvOS 26.4 or newer.
- Open Institutions
- Navigate to ‘Video and Audio‘
- Go to ‘HDMI output‘
- Choose ‘Audio structure‘
- Enable the option ‘Continuous audio connection‘ in

Apple describes it this way: ‘Apple TV uses a Dolby MAT connection for seamless transitions between different formats. Older receivers may indicate Atmos, but the original audio will play as intended.”
Continuous audio connection prevents issues where Apple TV interrupts the audio signal, leading to audio jumps or temporary dips in volume.
Operation Dolby MAT
Dolby MAT (Metadata-enhanced Audio Transmission) is a smart container that unites different audio formats, such as stereo, 5.1 PCM or Atmos, into one stable stream. The Apple TV will remain in this mode without switching. It is good to know that Dolby Mat retains the original audio quality and is not a downmix or conversion.

Older receivers may always display ‘Atmos’, but the source audio remains the same and plays as the maker intended. This is useful for systems with Sonos Arc or Beam, where 5.1 content previously sounded quieter; users now notice that the volumes are equal to those of Atmos.
