Week in Review 17: Tim Cook steps down as CEO, Software updates, iPhone Ultra and more

Apple has officially announced that Tim Cook will resign from his position as CEO and move to chairman of the supervisory board later this year. This brings to an end a remarkable era at Apple, in which Cook led the company for more than fifteen years. He was the driving force behind Apple’s continued growth after Steve Jobs, making the company one of the most influential and valuable technology companies in the world.

His successor is John Ternus, who has played an increasingly prominent role in Apple’s hardware division in recent years. An experienced leader, Ternus is well known within the company and seen as the person who can shape the next phase of Apple, at a time when innovation, silicon, AI and product innovation are more crucial than ever.

It is common knowledge that Apple is currently working on their first foldable iPhone, which will most likely be presented this fall. The iPhone Ultra, believed to be the name of this model, could be the world’s first foldable smartphone with a durable, wrinkle-free screen. This means that the fold line will not be visible once the device is opened.

This marks Apple’s entry into the world of foldable smartphones, with a strong emphasis on premium quality. The iPhone Ultra would open like a book, making it about the size of an iPad mini when fully unfolded. When folded, the iPhone will take on a more square shape than current models.

This year, Apple has equipped the iPad Pro with a brand new OLED screen. Anyone who had hoped that the iPad Air would soon have such a screen will unfortunately be disappointed. An iPad Air with OLED display is not expected until 2028 at the earliest.

This information, reported by The Elec, was shared by Omdia researcher Kang Min-soo during the Korea Display Conference 2024 in Seoul. Min-soo says the iPad Air will have a one-stack OLED configuration and will be comparable to the OLED panels of the iPhone 15.
