This is how the updated notification screen of iOS 11 works

With iOS 11, Apple merges the lock and notification screen. But how exactly does this work, and what has changed?

iOS 11 notification screen merged

All notifications that you receive on your iPhone or iPad are collected in the notification screen. Anyone who uses WhatsApp or any other chat app extensively knows how quickly they can fill the screen with dozens of messages.

The messages first appeared on your lock screen and in the notification overview, but will be merged with the arrival of iOS 11 this fall. This means that you can learn to operate a locked iPhone in a new way.

By pressing any button you wake up the screen, after which you will see all unopened notifications. However, swipe up from the bottom and you will immediately end up in the ‘old-fashioned’ notification screen.

More privacy by shielding notifications

Finally, with iOS 11 you can protect the content of all your notifications. After all, a report often contains personal information that not everyone needs to see. With iOS 10 you could already protect iMessage messages, now Apple does this for all apps on your iPhone. All you have to do is the following:

  1. Open Settings;
  2. Go to ‘Notifications’;
  3. Choose an app where you want to hide the notifications;
  4. Scroll down and tap Show Preview.

You can choose from ‘Always’, ‘When unlocked’ and ‘Never’. This second one is interesting because it also affects the way opening works.

Tap to open, only after unlocking

If you are used to swiping a notification from right to left to open the corresponding app, you will be disappointed with iOS 11. Apple has removed and adjusted this option. From now on, you have to unlock your iPhone before you can do anything with a notification. After the device is unlocked, you can tap a notification to jump directly to the app. It is important that you do not press the home button, but only lightly place your finger on the scanner.

iOS 11 will be released as a free update to everyone this fall. If you don’t want to wait for that, you can already get started with the public beta.
