Turn off roaming, internet and 4G on your iPhone: this is how you do it

Are you going on holiday or business trip outside the European Union? Then the rates for internet use can be high. Turning off roaming and turning off the internet can therefore save you a lot of money. This is how you do that.

Turn off roaming on iPhone

Roaming charges have been abolished in the European Union since June 2017, but charges can still rise significantly outside of that. To avoid surprises, turning off roaming on your iPhone is the best option. You do this like this:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone;
  2. Tap on ‘Mobile network’;
  3. Select ‘Mobile data options’;
  4. Slide the switch at ‘Data roaming’ so that the box turns gray.

Roaming costs are the costs you incur when you call, internet or text messages abroad via another mobile network. Your Dutch provider does not have a local network in this country, so you have to pay to rent the masts from others. These costs will be recovered from you.

Turn off internet on iPhone

Is your bundle running out, or are you going through your MBs too quickly? Then turn off mobile data completely. This way you decide for yourself when you use your last MBs. This is how you turn off the internet on your iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone;
  2. Tap on ‘Mobile network’;
  3. Slide the switch at ‘Mobile data’ so that the box turns gray.

If you often have to turn off mobile data, it is more convenient to do this via the Control Panel. Simply swipe up from the bottom of the iPhone screen and tap the green cell tower. The icon will turn gray and your mobile data is now off.

Disable 4G on iPhone

With 4G, web pages and apps load within a fraction of a second, but you quickly go through your bundle. If you need to be economical with your last MBs but want to stay connected to the internet, for example to continue to receive WhatsApp messages, it is therefore more convenient to reduce the internet speed. How to turn off 4G on your iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone;
  2. Go to ‘Mobile network’;
  3. Tap on ‘Mobile data options’;
  4. Choose ‘Enable 4G’;
  5. Select the ‘Off’ option.
